Height and Relief

My goodness, I am quite RELIEVED I got to the top RELIEF My goodness, I am quite RELIEVED I got to the top Relief means the height and shape of the land. I like to remember it by thinking about how relieved I am when I get to the top. – This associates it with land height and shape. Take care with the spelling though. www.rockeducation.co.uk

Keywords! Height Relief

Relief means the shape of the land. There are three ways to show relief on a map. Can you think of any?

Ways of showing Height and Relief 0-10m 11-20m 21-30m 1. Colour shading or 30 . 15 . 2. Spot heights 3. Contours (the closer together, the steeper the slope) 30 20 10

Why are contour lines so useful? CONTOUR LINES will tell us a number of things about the land: first they tell us about the height – every point on the contour line is the same height above sea level. since the height of contour lines is 10 metres apart i.e. 10, 20 30, 40 (we call this vertical interval) they help us to work out the height of land that does not have a height shown. contour lines also help us to work out how steep the land is, we do this by following a very simple rule; the closer the contour lines are together the steeper the land is but the further they are apart the flatter the land is. If you can’t see any contours you know the land is very flat.

How to identify features on an O.S. map…

What is a cross section? A cross section is a slice through the land along a line between 2 points. It shows the shape of the land this line travels through. Why are cross sections useful?
