College Admissions: CADRs

CADRs – College Academic Distribution Requirements English 4 years Social Studies 3 years Science 2-3 years * Washington in-state public universities require students to take a Physics or Chemistry class in addition to Biology World Languages 2-3 years Fine Arts 1 year Colleges vary on how much credit and which classes they will count to satisfy this requirement

CADRs (Cont’) Mathematics 4 years Washington in-state public universities require: Math through Algebra 2 A quantitative math-based class in senior year (either a math class or math-based science such as physics or chemistry count) Completion of a higher-level math (e.g. pre-calculus) prior to the senior year exempts students from the senior year quantitative course requirement.

CADRs (Cont’) Additional academic electives (math, history, English, world language, science & fine arts) Always check with colleges for specific requirements!

Colleges like to see… Four years of Math A year of Fine Art At least 3 years of the same language

International Baccalaureate (IB) IB information on the Skyline Website IB curriculum is divided into Standard Level (usually 1 year) and Higher level (usually 2 year) courses We do NOT offer SL classes in English, History, Biology or Physics. Your first year of the HL class is IB English 1, IB Bio 1, etc.

IB American Studies All IB diploma students must take the first year of the IB History HL class (called IB American Studies) because: It is blocked with IB English It meets a state graduation requirement Taking the second year of the IB History HL class can be optional for some students, but they must then take another Group 3 subject to satisfy IB’s Group 3 requirement

Middle School Credits in Math & World Language Students may elect to have the letter grade and credit applied to their high school transcript for qualifying world language and math classes from middle school. You have until the end of your junior year to make this decision. Make sure it doesn’t lower your GPA Once a class has been added to your transcript it cannot be removed.

IB Exams Next Year Registration will be in October 2018 Register for the exams for the subjects marked with an SL in the 11th grade section of your Candidate Agreement Form Registration fee (jr. year only for diploma candidates): last year, ca. $168 Test fee for each test: last year, $116

TOK Year 1 Required by IB 8 sessions Wednesday mornings Calendar available in Spring 2017 1st session in September 2017 (CAS Intro)

CAS 3 strands: Creativity, Activity and Service Starts when school starts in the fall Participate in some form on a weekly basis Participate in one experience from each strand each semester More info will be coming in the Fall at Pre-TOK

The IB Diploma Awarded in July AFTER you have received your Skyline diploma You receive your Skyline diploma by completing all IB diploma requirements even if you don’t score high enough to get an IB diploma Must earn a minimum of 24 points out of a possible 45 7 points possible per subject, plus 3 extra points for TOK and your Extended Essay

Skyline HS Average Score Our average diploma score last year was 32. The world average is 30. Our highest score last year was 42; our lowest score was 22 90% of our IB diploma candidates received their IB Diploma

A Few Caveats May not earn an “E” (lowest score) on your Extended Essay or TOK Must earn at least 12 points over 3 HLs; must earn at least 9 points over 3 SLs May not earn a “1” in any subject May not earn 3 or more “2s,” or 4 or more “3s”

Why the EE and TOK Matter 3 points can…put you up to 30 or 32 total points, which can in some cases earn you a chunk of credits in college 3 points can…bump you up to 24 so you earn your IB diploma 3 points can…help you get the score to get admitted into the overseas college you want to attend

Course Selection Materials

New IB Classes Offered this Year IB Economics SL Talk to Mr. Sherman for more information on this class IB Visual Arts HL IB Japanese HL

IB Math Options After Algebra 2: Pre-HL Math, Math HL 1, Math HL 2 Precalculus, then Statistics or Calculus plus IB Math Studies SL one of the 2 years IB Math SL 1 plus IB Math SL 2 (SL test) All 3 paths are “good math paths” respected by colleges. Choose the path that fits you best and where you will be successful.

Course Selection Things to keep in mind when selecting course requests: You will need to list an alternate choice for sciences & electives. Do not list an alternate for: IB Block World Language Math

More things to keep in mind… Balance of HLs and SLs; subjects from IB Groups 1-5 Trying to skip a year of world language or math is discouraged/not permitted in most cases Balance – consider academic load and outside involvements CADRS (College Academic Distribution Requirements)

Course Request Sheet Choose classes wisely Be aware of Learning Recommendations Fill in all blank lines and boxes unless otherwise instructed Alternate choices - If no alternates are listed, an alternate will be selected for you. Alternates MUST be different than first choice classes. Again, do NOT list alternates for Block, language or math. Signatures & contact information required

7th Period Option 7th period courses are completely optional Please read Course Guide carefully as these classes will have different learning requirements, meeting times, and possible outside of class requirements (service hours, lab hours, flexibility, etc.). Optional 7th period registration process is available on the course selection portion of the SHS website
