Government Systems Sainte-Domingue was the name of the island. Divided island with Spain – French controlled western 1/3 Important colony because of sugar and coffee plantations “Pearl of the Antilles” Four Very Different Social Groups Wealth Planters(white), Free people of Color, Poor Whites, Slaves Wealthy Planters who owned large plantations and a lot of slaves therefore controlled life on the island colony. 90% of the people were slaves and most were African born Government was controlled by King of France

Causes Long term Causes: Short term Causes: Slaves: Slavery on Sugar Plantations was brutal Poor Whites: wanted more rights and the wealth to own slaves Free People of Color: wanted more rights in the government Short term Causes: French Revolution & Declaration of the Rights of Man News about the expansion of rights to the lower classes gets groups excited 3-way Civil War Planters & Gov’t, Poor White & People of African decent

Battles/Conflicts Brief Timeline Haiti was successful because… 1791 -1794 Civil War 1798 – British and Spanish begin to attack the freed slaves 1801 Napoleon sends soldiers to reclaim island 1803 – Last of the Europeans are defeated Battle of Vertiere – Nov. 18th, 1803: France surrenders Haiti was successful because… outnumbered whites well-organized under L’Outverture and Dessalines Used guerrilla tactics against the Europeans- Quick hit and run attacks
