Root Types

Tap Root 1 big primary root with much smaller secondary roots Examples: dandelions, carrots, beets, turnips, radishes, parsnips, young oak, hickory, conifers Can penetrate deeply into the soil = good for drought conditions & food storage

Tap Root

Fibrous Root Most common root type Extensively branching roots; holds soil particles together (prevent erosion) Examples: all grasses, many weeds & tree species

Fibrous Root

Adventitious (Prop) Root Root that grow out from the stem Provide mechanical support; help support a tree at its base Example: corn More common in tropical & subtropical areas

Adventitious (Prop) Root

Aerial Root Roots that grow above ground & absorb moisture from the air or are meant to provide support for climbing Example: epiphytes - orchids in rainforest Examples: English Ivy, Poison Ivy & many other vines & creepers

Aerial Root
