Progress of the new irradiation platform at LIPSION (and more) Charlotta Nilsson T. Reinert, T. Butz University of Leipzig

The LIPSION facility 3.5 MV SingletronTM accelerator, horizontal beam line, protons or alphas, E<3 MeV (cell irradiation: E=2.25 MeV), focused beam spot size ca. 100 nm (low current mode), vertical Petri dish arrangement

News New chamber New translation stage New irradiation platform New software

The new chamber

The new translation stage

The new irradiation platform Still not finalized... Reconstruction of the entire irradiation stage will start this autumn New sample holder & Interior of the chamber Design new Petri dish – perhaps even intelligent... Make arrangements for CO2 inlet and temperature regulation How/where to place the microscope/the detector?

The new software Control the new translation stage Targeted irradiation of living cells: 1. Cell recognition 2. Beam control / Automated cell irradiation

Programming – the first baby steps C++/Visual C++ for stage control and beam control ImagePro Plus for cell recognition New approach...!

New approach Beam control: Real-time system sockets Control system (Linux RTAI) sockets Control system (Windows) C++ QT, ACE sockets Delivers target coord. Stage controller ImagePro Plus

My tasks Participation in the completion of the new irradiation platform (especially creating an irradiation stage, testing the translation stage) Programming of the control software for the translation stage (I get help from Silvio Perticoni!) – later on also cell recognition Assume some responsibility for the cell culturing... I‘m trying to learn from Anja Fiedler!

...and some news from Lund... 3 years in Leipzig, 1 year in Lund –> Swedish Ph. D. Activities in Lund so far: Courses taken in Cellbiophysics, Nuclear probes and ion beams in the materials and life sciences, Experimental methods in nuclear physics, ... „Evaluation of a pre-cell hit detector for the future single ion hit facility in Lund“ – presented at IBA17, Sevilla, 2005

„Evaluation of a pre-cell hit detector for the future single ion hit facility in Lund“ silicon transmission detector, 9 µm, 2*2 mm2 Recommended bias = 2 V (leakage current = 20 nA) Signal-to-noise ratio Efficiency 7 different biases: 0, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 70 V

Experiments A Hamamatsu photo diode (stop detector) placed 4 cm behind the silicon detector 2.55 MeV protons, 4800 protons/second The signals from the two detectors were amplified, pulse-shaped and fed into different ADCs. The triggering required coincident signals from the two detectors.

Results – Signal-to-noise ratio

Results – Efficiency & Conclusion Signal-to-noise ratio ok Efficiency too low Optimising the geometry may help improving the efficiency Test of the beam scattering in the detector using CR-39 needed Can the detector serve as vacuum window?
