Livestock Terminology Comp. 1.01: Define terms to distinguish animals by sex, age, and physical traits in beef, swine, and poultry

Terms Cattle or Bovine: pertaining to cows Swine: pertaining to pigs Poultry: pertaining to chickens, turkeys etc Equestrian: pertaining to horses

Terms Purebred: an animal of recognized breed that is eligible for registration in the official herd book of breeds Grade: any animal not of a purebred or eligible for registration, that possesses the major characteristics of a breed Litter: pigs farrowed by a sow at one time Castrate: to remove sex organs from a male

Bovine: Of or pertaining to: Bulls, Cows, Calves, etc. Cattle Bovine: Of or pertaining to: Bulls, Cows, Calves, etc.

Male Cattle Not Castrated: Bull Castrated at Young Age: Steer Castrated at Older Age: Stag

Female Cattle Female who gave birth: Cow Female who hasn’t birthed: Heifer Baby: Calf

Swine Swine: Of or pertaining to pigs, sows, boars, etc Farrow: a litter of pigs

Swine Males Not Castrated male: Boar Castrated older Male: Stag Castrated younger male: Barrow

Female Swine Female who has given birth: Sow Female who has not birthed: Gilt Baby: Pig
