Living and Nonliving Things

Living and Nonliving Things

What is a living thing? A living thing is alive and able to carry out life processes What is a life process? Think of what your body does Grow and develop React to things around you (shiver when it’s cold, sweat when it’s hot) Able to reproduce All of these things use ENERGY!

What is a nonliving thing? A nonliving thing is NOT alive, so it cannot carry out life processes What traits could you look for to decide if something is living or nonliving?

Traits of Living Things Made of Cells All living things are made of tiny parts called cells. Some are made up of only one cell. Obtain and Use Energy Plants get energy from the sun. Animals get energy from the food they eat and use that energy to power their activities! Respond to Surroundings When a plant bends towards the light, it is responding to its surroundings. Grow and Develop When you get taller, you are growing. When your body changes during your lifetime, you are developing Reproduce The ability to produce offspring, or young

Living or Nonliving?

Living or Nonliving?

Environment vs. Ecosystem An environment is all the living and nonliving things that surround an organism An ecosystem is all the living and nonliving things that exist and interact in one place! To survive, the organisms in an ecosystem depend on each other and on the nonliving things that share the ecosystem
