What distinguishes a living thing What distinguishes a living thing? Provide some examples of living and nonliving things.

Organism Any independently living thing- plant, animal or other.

Things to think about Some organisms can appear to be nonliving When organisms are put into an appropriate environment, they can become active Different organisms have different environments that allow them to become active

Definitions Living- shows all characteristics of life Dormant- does not show characteristics of life until placed in the right environment. Alive but inactive Dead- was alive at one time but no longer is Nonliving- has never been, and never will be, living.

Question to think about What are the survival benefits of dormancy?

Respiration (Gas Exchange) Stimuli (responds to environment) Movement (Cells) Respiration (Gas Exchange) Stimuli (responds to environment) Growth Reproduction Eliminates waste Energy (food) Needs water
