Presentation transcript:

Civil Engineering Task – Explain that civil engineering projects are: Large scale Generally involve the movement of large quantities of soil Are often funded by the government Involve building things such as: Roads Bridges Railways Tunnels Airports Dams Task – Find 5 pictures of civil engineering projects, some should be during construction and some should be complete

Civil Engineering Why do we need new roads? Increasing population - Why do we need bridges? Re-word – without shipping ports and airports we cannot export or import goods (now explain why we need to do this) Why does the government fund most civil engineering projects? Think about who benefits. Click on the link to get more information: http://www.dt157.com/Level%202%20Unit%202/L2M1_areas.html

Civil Engineering Projects – HS2 (Pick 3 of the projects to describe). What is HS2? Find a map of the route. How much will it cost? Will it ease pressure on the roads? What is the effect on the environment? How many trees will they plant?

Civil Engineering Projects – Cross Rail (Pick 3 of the projects to describe). What is Cross Rail? Find a map of the route. How much will it cost? Will it ease pressure on the roads? What is the effect on property value along the route? How will it help commuters in London? What specialist machinery will be used?

Civil Engineering Projects – Thames Tideway Tunnel (Pick 3 of the projects to describe). Find a map of the route. What is the Thames Tideway tunnel? How much will it cost? How long will it take to build? Why do we need a new sewer system, how old is the last one. HYGENE / DISEASE. What specialist equipment will they need? Where is all the soil going = Wallasea Island

Civil Engineering Projects – Thames Flood Barrier (Pick 3 of the projects to describe). Insert pictures What is the Thames Flood Barrier? How much did it cost? Why do we need it?

Civil Engineering Projects – Heathrow Airport (Pick 3 of the projects to describe). Insert pictures Why is Heathrow the worlds busiest airport? Does Heathrow just have passenger planes? What are the expansion plans for Heathrow

Civil Engineering Projects – Chanel Tunnel (Pick 3 of the projects to describe). What is it? How far out were the two tunnels when the met in the middle? What specialist machinery was used? When did the construction start and finish? Insert pictures.

Residential Construction. Find pictures of all the types of residential construction What is it? Houses Flats Apartments Bungalows List the people involved in building the structures. Who are the NHBC? What do they do?

Residential Construction – Traditional Construction Describe it – Bricks and blocks Find pictures of cavity walls and houses during construction Explain that it can delayed by bad weather and materials shortages. List the people involved in building the structures. Explain that you cannot go higher than 4-5 stories without widening the walls

Residential Construction – Timber Frame Construction Describe it – Timber supports the load. It is then clad with? Find pictures of timber framed houses during construction It is quicker to build because? What does prefabricated mean? How are timber frames prefabricated? Why is this an advantage?

Residential Construction – Concrete Construction Describe it – Concrete and steel. What is formwork? Find pictures of concrete apartments during construction. Show how they are clad. They are more sound proof because? Concrete can be cast in situ or prefabricated – what’s the difference? Generally too expensive for small residential, but you can go much higher than other methods.

Residential Construction – Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) Describe it – Foam and OSB board Find pictures – search for SIPs Houses Quick to erect on site Very low U-Values

Now pick one more area or construction from http://www.dt157.com/Level%202%20Unit%202/L2M1_areas.html Create 2 – 3 slides about it. Get pictures and describe them.
