Key Points: Each essay is scored on a 15 point scale. Each essay requires you to demonstrate an understanding of the historical process. You have a copy of the markbands – make sure you read it – it is a tool to help you maximise your potential. Understanding – read the question!!! Answer the question that is being asked. Knowledge – know your facts – people, definitions, events. Be analytical – answers make arguments. PEE – Point, Explain, Evidence

Before you write: Read the question and make sure you understand it. Make sure you pay attention to the command term and what it is asking! Look for clues in the question to help you structure your response. If there are two parts to the question – make sure you answer both parts! Always create an outline – the more detailed your outline, the easier it is to write your essay! Think about three points!

The Essay - Introduction Demonstrate an understanding of the question – specifically reference the question. Clarify and words or concepts that are mentioned – total war, propaganda, etc. Include a clear thesis – make sure it identifies your argument. Signpost the reader through your essay – give a brief overview of how you plan to respond to the question.

Main Body of your response Start each paragraph with an argumentative point – think back to your sign- posting. Explain your point and support with evidence. Evidence – the more specific the better. Use a thematic approach – this will ensure your essay is driven by analysis, not description or narrative. Important acronyms – PEE and SPERT Do not just make assertions – you need to support your ideas – opinions are fine, but they are like noses – everybody has one. “He (Nixon) was corrupt.: - how do you know this? What is the evidence to support this idea?

The Conclusion Restate your thesis and main points This is the “I told you so…” If appropriate, challenge the question – address the assumption that the question is making. Example: “Why did the League of nations only last 20 years?” This suggests that 20 years was a dismal record; you could make the point that the surprising thing is that it lasted that long.
