Cells
Objectives Identify parts of cell and understand their functions with 80% accuracy. Define key terms for the cell with 100% accuracy.
Why? Why are cells important? Why should we know the parts of a cell? Why should we know what a cell looks like?
What? What is the definition of cell? What are the different parts of a cell? What are the functions of each part of the cell? What does a cell look like?
Terms Cell: The Basic unit of life Chromosome: A strand of genetic material that contains genetic code Females: XX Males: XY Gene: A unit of inheritance composed of DNA DNA: (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a nucleic acid containing the genetic instructions used in development and functioning of a cell
DNA
Animal Cell
Chromosomes Structures that are physical carriers of genes, made of DNA, are located in cell nucleus
Cell
Cell Membrane- Delicate structure that surrounds the cell
Cytoplasm Cell fluid containing all cell structures
Nucleus Control center of a cell, contains most of the DNA
Mitochondria Energy producing structures in the cell cytoplasm, contain some DNA
Ribosome Site where new proteins are produced, result of genetic expression
Rough endoplasmic reticulum Synthesize and packages proteins
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum Include lipid synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, calcium concentration, drug detoxification, and attachment of receptors on cell membrane proteins.
Golgi apparatus Where molecules are packaged for delivery to other cell components
Centriole Organize mitotic apparatus which consists of asters and spindle fibers which help in division of chromosomes
Lysosome Destroying any foreign body and unwanted cell organelles that may be present in the cytoplasm
