The best way to persuade others is to use three types of appeals: Methods of Persuasion The best way to persuade others is to use three types of appeals:

Emotional Appeal Ethical Appeal Logical Appeal Methods of Persuasion Emotional Appeal Ethical Appeal Logical Appeal

Emotional Appeal Emotionally loaded language Emotional examples Vivid descriptions Narratives of emotional events Emotional tone Figurative language Do your words evoke feelings of … love? … sympathy? … fear? Do your visuals evoke feelings of compassion? … envy? Does your characterization of the competition evoke feelings of hate? contempt?

Ethical Appeal Ethical appeal or Credibility, means convincing by the character of the author. We tend to believe people whom we respect. Does the audience respect you? Are your tone and word choices respectful? Does the audience believe you are of good character? Does the audience believe you are generally trustworthy? Does the audience believe you are an authority on this speech topic?

Logical Appeal This appeal is based on logic or reason. Definitions Factual data and statistics Quotations Citations from experts and authorities Informed opinions Does your message make sense? Is your message based on facts, statistics, and evidence? Will your call-to-action lead to the desired outcome that you promise?

The Power of Persuasion Brainstorm: In what areas of our lives will we need to persuade? What elements help you to persuade more effectively?

Could you persuade someone to go into battle even though he or she would likely not survive?

Writers on Strike The Screen Writers Guild is on strike. That means there are no writers in Hollywood. However, there is a great script about a battle between good vs. evil, man vs. nature. This movie is sure to be a huge success. The only problem is it is not finished. Here is the story:

Writers on Strike The government was working on a top secret mission to create a formula that would brainwash all of our pets into fighting machines. If the formula worked, our pets could go to war and millions of American lives would be saved and peace could spread throughout the world. However, something goes terribly wrong with the formula and it leaks out into the world. Now all of the animals have turned their backs against us and attempt to take over our world!

Writers on Strike Every part of this movie is written except the pivotal speech by our president to our troops before they go into the final battle with the evil pets to save the world. Sadly with this final battle, most of our troops will not survive. This is your chance to become a star in Hollywood. Your job is to write a persuasive speech for our president to motivate our troops to put their lives on the line in order to save the human race from extinction. Label your strongest examples of each appeal. When we finish, volunteers will give their speeches to our class.
