Upgrading from r4.1.4 to r7: Making a Smooth Transition Roger Suttmeier Support Distribution Manager June 14, 2006

Overview  Upgrading can be relatively painless  The key…plan your upgrade  Top AllFusion Modeling Suite Upgrade FAQs

Creating Your Plan  Review your “as is” environment  Describe your “to be” environment  Plan the transition from “as is” to “to be”

Planning the Transition  Explore all the Resources  CA Education  Product Documentation  SupportConnect  Your company’s IT department  Identify the necessary steps  Explore the transition in a test environment

CA Education Resources EM115 AllFusion® ERwin® Data Modeler: Effective Data Modeling Practices ILT 4 day(s) EM125 AllFusion® ERwin® Data Modeler: Model Architecture Practices and Standards 3 day(s) EM135 AllFusion® Model Manager: Collaborative Model Management in a Secure Environment New 2 day(s) ER170 AllFusion® ERwin® Data Modeler: r7 Highlights 1 day(s) ERL70 WILL ERR70 WILR 6 hour(s)

Product Documentation Resources AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler ReadMe, especially:  6.2 Performance When Converting 4.1.4 Models to r7 Format  6.3 Understanding Complete Compare Differences After Converting Your Models  AllFusion Process Modeler ReadMe.

Product Documentation  AllFusion Model Manager ReadMe, especially:  5.1 Conversion Information  5.2 Conversion of AllFusion MM 4.1.4 Custom Security Profiles  5.3 Conversion Notes for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server/Sybase  5.4 Understanding Complete Compare Differences After Converting Your Models

Product Documentation Resources  AllFusion MM Administration Guide, Chap 3:  Upgrade Your License  Before You Install AllFusion MM  AllFusion MM Database Upgrade Recommendations  MS SQL Server or Sybase DBMS Considerations  Oracle DBMS Consideration  AllFusion MM 4.1.4 to MM r7 Conversion  Upgrade the AllFusion MM Software

Product Documentation The Conversion Process  AllFusion MM Property Conversion  AllFusion ERwin DM and AllFusion PM Property Conversion  Converting your AllFusion MM Database  Manual Conversion  Automated Conversion  Convert Your AllFusion MM Database on a Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase DBMS  Convert Your AllFusion MM Database on an Oracle DBMS

CA SupportConnect Resources  AllFusion MS Product Home Pages  Download and ordering options  Total License Care (TLC) links and information  Conversion Information Center  AllFusion Model Manager r7 Pre-Conversion Checklist  Understanding Complete Compare Differences After Converting Your Models  Pre-Conversion Consultation  CA Technical Support can test convert your AllFusion MM (if needed)  CA Technical Services

Identify the Necessary Steps  Licensing  Ensure you have the same number of r7 licenses as 4.1.4 licenses  Review the Site (ID) distribution of licenses  Software Distribution  Education  Ensure all users and your Model Manager Administrator are not learning during the upgrade process  Releases 4.1.4 and 7 can co-exist on the same PC

Identify the Necessary Steps Consider DBMS/Hardware upgrades  Current DBMS/server old/slow/not supported  Server and/or DBMS upgrades are best done before (or after) the conversion  Avoids the added complication of moving your DBMS and encountering permissions, connection problems  Improved hardware speeds the conversion  Coordination with your DBA or IT departments  Technical Documents are available on SupportConnect to assist you in the migration process.

Identify the Necessary Steps  Modeling process changes R7 has many new features, some that may require a process change, some that may encourage you to make a process changes  Timing with deliverables (projects)  Automatic or manual conversion of your AllFusion Model Manager  Identify the resources/obstacles/time lines necessary for each step  Avoid burning bridges

Explore Your Plan in a Test Run  Determine how long an automated or manual conversion will take  Identify the surprises you have not foreseen (each mart is unique)  Create or research solutions or workarounds to the unforeseen surprises  Iterate the test run until you are sure there are no surprises

Upgrade FAQs  Do I need new licenses?  New license keys are required  You must have maintenance to obtain r7 licenses  25 digit licenses as opposed to 16 digit licenses  There is no 30 day grace period, you must have a license  You can select Remind Me, but you will be nagged later  Ensure you have the AllFusion Model Manager license that supports the same, or greater, number of users than your 4.1.4 version  All Total License Care (TLC) contact points can be found in the AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler r7 is now GA and available for download here link on the Product Home Page on SupportConnect.

Upgrade FAQs  Where to do I get my r7 upgrade?  AllFusion Modeling Suite Product Home Pages  AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler r7 is now GA and available for download here in the What’s New section- Self Extracting Zip File  Downloads, Products in the standard SupportConnect menu on the left  AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler r7 is now GA - Place order for boxed product here link

Upgrade FAQs  Why does it take so long to open a model after upgrading/conversion?  First opening of an r7 model completes the conversion  This is a one time performance hit  True for standalone 4.1.4 to r7 model  True for models stored in your Model Manager  What versions of 4.1.4 can be converted to r7?  GA, SP1, SP2, SP3  4.1 Models in my converted Model Manager cannot be opened in r7?  Correct. Call support for a script to help you identify 4.1 models in your 4.1.4 AllFusion MM

Upgrade FAQs  How do I know my models have converted successfully?  Understanding Complete Compare Differences After Converting Your Models document in the Conversion Information Center can explain differences you may see

Upgrade FAQs  Should I do an Automatic or Manual Conversion of my AllFusion Model Manager?  Manual Conversion - Advantages  You move your models from your old AllFusion MM to your new AllFusion MM, one model at a time.  You can select the models you want to move, and leave those that you do not.  You can “clean up” your mart if there are many models or versions which are no longer in use, which would extend conversion time. (cont)

Upgrade FAQs  Should I do an Automatic or Manual Conversion of my AllFusion Model Manager?  Manual Conversion – Advantages  You can run both Model Manager versions simultaneously, and move incrementally, model by model, to the new AllFusion MM.  You can host your new AllFusion MM on a different server or database platform than your old AllFusion MM version.

Upgrade FAQs  Should I do an Automatic or Manual Conversion of my AllFusion Model Manager?  Manual Conversion - Disadvantages  Version history is lost on any models checked into the new mart  Being a manual process, it is time consuming and labor intensive.

Upgrade FAQs  Should I do an Automatic or Manual Conversion of my AllFusion Model Manager?  Automatic Conversion - Advantage  It is automated and all models retain their full history  Automatic Conversion - Disadvantages  It takes a longer if your mart is large, or your client/server hardware is limited  The automated conversion must be done in the same database instance as your previous version of AllFusion MM, which may require more space than is available, or may require you to move your old version of AllFusion MM, if you cannot create additional space

Upgrade FAQs  Are there any special considerations for AllFusion Process Modeler?  Synchronize all models before automatic conversion  Manual conversion keeps the links to AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler  Why do models open and save more slowly in my new r7 MM?  Your database may be fragmented. Re-index the r7 MM database and possibly run table and/or index statistics.  Why are my r7 models larger than my 4.1.4 models?  r7 models have more objects and properties.

Summary  Upgrading can be relatively painless  The key…plan your upgrade  Top AllFusion Modeling Suite Upgrade FAQs
