The Scientific Revolution

Recap of the Reformation How did Europe change during the Reformation? How might these changes impact the way that people thought about the Church and the world?

Roots of the Scientific Revolution Ancient Greeks Rational Thought (look at the world in a logical way) Humanism Study humanity and our relationship to the natural world The Reformation Reject religion as the only way to explain the world

The Spark What happened in 1492? Christopher Columbus “discovers” the Americas Why would this finding shock people? Old ideas must be wrong – find new explanations

The Scientific Revolution The Birth of Modern Science If God does not control how the world works; how can we figure out how it does work? The Scientific Method: Develop a theory (explanation for something you observe) and then test it through experimentation. Share results and improve Study the natural world more closely

Inventions Powerful Telescopes The Microscope Thermometer Barometer (air pressure)

New Ideas Is the Earth at the center of our solar system (geocentric)? The sun is - How is this counter intuitive? Nicolaus Copernicus: The Sun is at the center of the solar system (Heliocentric) Johannes Kepler: Planets move in elliptical, not circular, orbits Galileo Galilei: Use experiments to test theories Sir Isaac Newton: The laws of gravity and motion

The Church Why would the Scientific Revolution be troubling to the Church? If the stars and the Earth move it challenges the idea that God created the universe in a perfect and everlasting way If the Earth is not the center of the universe, we are not as special as we thought If we can explain the world without God, people will not want to be religious anymore – Church will lose power What do you think the Church will do to protect their power?
