What is a Mineral? SPI 0707.7.1 (Minerals) In your journal, create KWL chart. Be prepared to write the things you know, what to know, and learn about minerals

Minerals are… 1. Natural 2. inorganic (never alive) 3. Solid 4. Crystalline (structure) SPI 0707.7.1 (Minerals)

How can I tell if something is a mineral? Answer these four questions: Is it nonliving material? Is it a solid? Does it have a crystalline structure? Is it formed in nature? --If the answer isn’t “yes” to all 4 questions, then it’s not a mineral!!!

Is it non-living? A mineral is inorganic, meaning it isn’t made of living things

Is it solid? Minerals can’t be gases or liquids, they can only be pure solids.

Does it have a crystalline structure? Minerals are crystals, which have a repeating inner structure that is often reflected in the shape of the crystal. Minerals generally have the same chemical composition throughout.

Is it formed in nature? Minerals are formed naturally. Crystalline materials made by people aren’t classified as minerals!

Group Activity! Identifying Minerals The following pictures are posted: wood, fossil, bone, granite, quartz crystal Observe the pictures and discuss with your group which ones are minerals by using the four questions. Write down the names of each item and “yes” if it is a mineral and “no” if it is not a mineral.
