Module 1… In Touch and Informed Communication Skills Module 1… In Touch and Informed

Introduction Why communication skills are necessary in technology? Technologists need to read books, articles, reports, proposals and many other types of documents about technology Technologists also need to write about technology; they need to communicate their ideas to others clearly and unambiguously The vocabulary, concepts, use of diagrams and so on are different in technology

An introduction to reading skills in technology Approaches to reading When you read, your purpose will be: to amuse yourself to inform yourself to learn IF your purpose is to learn How should you approach your reading

When reading the Novel Forming a mental picture We engage with the text, forming mental pictures as we read, and modifying these pictures where necessary. have preconceptions about the mental pictures we draw Connect the pieces of the pictures together to form a bigger picture

Reading to learn forming mental ‘pictures’ – concepts Readers of any document often have preconceptions about the subject matter – and may have to modify them in order to learn. Readers who want to learn tie together the various concepts they are forming, while reading, into a coherent whole. at the end of their reading pause and reflect on what they have got out of their reading and what they intend to do with it.

Basic reading skills Document 11 Faster Reading, Better Reading, by. Stanton Some people read faster than others Average reading speed is 600 words per minute Some read up to 1000 w.p.m. How? There is a simple quiz that will help you see what you are doing wrong…

Check yourself If you have answered 1, 4, 7, 10 and 12 then you are probably doing okay However, if you have answered any other also correct than see what you can do about it…

Different material different speed May be you are reading every thing at the same speed and it leaves you with less time This article will not help you read NOVELS faster This will help you read the hard material faster

The Physical Process of Reading Comprehension & Speed Some people feel that their comprehension improves as their reading speed improves The Physical Process of Reading Some people read slow because of faulty eye movement – which they are not aware of Increase your Fixation Have larger recognition span

Regression Attention on each word makes it difficult for the brain to make a meaningful sentence out of the words The result is daydreaming

What can you do??? Ask a friend to check your eye movement Don’t try to register the sound of the word in your head How to stop it???? By putting a finger on your lips Be comfortable while reading Increase your vocabulary

Sometimes you do not need to understand an article fully to answer all the question If your understanding is about 80% it is fine Try to skim the article

Dealing with difficult document Page 8 of book Skills says that you read Article 7 from book Documents I suggest that you do and try to follow the book in the process

How should you be writing these Rank the following according to the formality of the language and style that are likely to be used. An e-mail to a friend thanking her for a Christmas present. An engineering report prepared for a large company by a firm of consultants. An e-mail message to a more senior colleague explaining why you can’t attend a meeting. A school science textbook for ten to twelve year olds.
