INTRODUCTION RESULTS&DISCUSSION OBJECTIVES METHODOLOGY FUTURE WORK Synthesis and Characterization of Bioactive Composite for Dental Application Zenab Yaasir*, A.S Khan* *Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Lahore, Pakistan INTRODUCTION RESULTS&DISCUSSION Endodontic therapy (Root Canal Treatment) is the process of removing infected pulp from within the roots of teeth and finally shaping, filling and sealing the root canal system . The use of bioactive, tooth-like material can be employed as a good option for filling and sealing the root canal system with added advantage of endodontic tissue regeneration. FTIR ANALYSIS : Characteristic absorption bands : Pure TCP powder: Pronounced at 1040 cm-1(PO3-4)& 3756 cm-1 (H-O-H) B. TCP-Gelatine cross linked composites: I) Additional absorption bands at 1532cm-1&1536cm-1 owing to N-H stretching of (N-H-R) group. (II) Absorption bands were also observed at 1659 cm-1 due to stretch mode of C≡N. (III) At 1462 cm-1, presence of C=O corresponded to residual/un mixed cross linking agent. (IV) Additional band at 3000-3600 cm-1 was due to stretching mode of N-H mode in gelatin. THERMOGRAVIMETRIC ANALYSIS: Temperature range : 230 to 800 C Heat ramp : 10 C/min Sample weight decreased with increasing temperature with an average of approximately 85% weight loss. Therefore thermal stability at oral temperature (37 C) SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSOPY: Uniform distribution of powder particles within composite 1040 :PO3-4 3756 : H-O-H OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to develop a bioactive composite with potential application for endodontic therapy. (Root canal treatment) METHODOLOGY Local Regeneration of Dentin-Pulp Complex The experimental Bioactive composite composed of : TCP: Tricalcium Phosphate GELATIN: SAMPLE PREPARATION TCP powder was synthesized by microwave method with a Ca:P ratio of 1.5. It was incorporated into commercial gelatin on dissolution in water at specific temperature and cross linking agent was added. After homogenous stirring, the composite was freeze dried to achieve TCP-Gelatin composite films. Five percentage ratios were prepared of TCP:Gelatin composite and all Five groups further characterized: CHARACTERIZATION: Fourier Transform Infra Red spectroscopy (FTIR) Thermogravimetric Analysis(TGA) Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM 1532&1536: N-H stretch 1462: C=O 1659: C≡N stretch 3000-3600: N-H stretch Schematic diagram of Root Canal Treatment Periapical radiograph of infected and root canal treated tooth FUTURE WORK Includes further characterization: Raman Spectroscopy. XRD Physico-mechanical testing: Compressive strength Hardness The future work would encompass: Biocompatibility/cell toxicity studies Anti microbial testing In vitro cell culture studies Animal trials and Clinical trials CONCLUSION REFERENCES These analyses would assist in justifying the use of TCP-Gelatin composites in various areas of dentistry The main emphasis being on endodontic/root canal therapy, owing to their possible osteoconductive and antimicrobial properties.
