CogAT Teacher Training

What Is CogAT? Cognitive Abilities Test

Who do we test? October—Grades 2 and 5 take the full CogAT Three complete batteries and a PRACTICE TEST about 1 hour per battery 3 hours total (over 3 different school days)

How do we use it in GCISD? One data point for ASPIRE student identification Instructional tools based on student abilities We need to focus on this when working with data following the administration.

Remember Student cognitive abilities can develop as a student progresses in his/her education. Scores are valid for 2 years.

What does the test look like? Computer-based assessment that must be administered over a wired internet connection Proctor-Led or Audio-Led Proctor-Led=teacher reads each question to the class, after all students have responded, you read the next question. Teacher may translate directions/question into Spanish Self-paced=students wear headphones and hear the question read by the computer Both Spanish and English audio-led assessments are available

How long does it take? Verbal Battery Level 8 Grade 2 Level 11 Grade 5 Picture Analogies 13 10 Sentence Completion 14 Picture Classification

How long does it take? Quantitative Battery Level 8 Grade 2 Level 11 Number Analogies 15 10 Puzzles Series

How long does it take? Nonverbal Battery Level 8 Grade 2 Level 11 Figure Matrices 13 10 Paper Folding 11 Classification

Accommodations? Oral for all students Untimed for all students Audio available in English and Spanish Small group allowed No calculators/calculation devices Repeated directions are allowed for all Proctor may repeat Or student can have the computer repeat the directions Sentence Completion may be omitted for ELLs If not appropriate, the ARD committee can choose that a student not test.

Teacher Training Videos All teachers should watch the appropriate training video. This will review login and usage of the CogAT system. Training Video The videos are about 6 minutes in length.

Getting Ready to Test Log in to the CogAT/Riverside Data Manager site. User ID (UID) is your GCISD email address first.last@gcisd.net Password (PW) can be reset using the provided “forgot password” link

DataManager Screen

Click on the Navigation Button. Select “Assessments”

Click on the blue button. DO NOT click on the blue underlined name of the session until it is time to test. This starts the session; it expires 24 hours from being started and will have to be re-created. Find your test session and session code.

Day of Testing Log into RiversideDataManager.com Note your session code; write it on the board. Log all student computers on using UID: xxxtesting (xxx=your campus 3 letter code) Password: the unique password that is emailed each week.  DO NOT WRITE THIS PASSWORD ON THE BOARD. THIS IS A TESTING VIOLATION!!! Find the CogAT Lockdown Browser on the student desktop. Launch it. Students log in on the right with their GCISD ID# and the Session Code. A “Draw Here” screen appears for students to use while waiting to start testing. The students need to check for their name at the top of the Draw Here page.

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE – USE IT! Be patient, last year there were some pages that took a while to load. Just breathe and wait. Don’t click, click, click until you READ, READ, READ. Computers and servers are SLOW when multiple people login at the same time.

Once all students are in: Approve all students. Walk around to actively monitor students. Each student must hit submit. When all students in a subtest have completed testing, you can Continue Testing All—advance to next subtest (Be sure this is what you want to do) End Testing All—stop testing. Students will have to log in with a new session code.
