Welcome to the Spring semester Anthropology 2 Dr. Blair Gibson

Did you Know? Student Resources at El Camino College Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) Help for the financially disadvantaged Where? Student activity center, 2nd floor. Special Resource Center Where? In back of Student Activity Center Offers help to physically challenged students.

Student Health Center – Offers help with health and psychological problems, like test anxiety – a principal factor behind student no-shows to tests and make-ups. Where? In physical education complex, pool building. Writing Center – Offers help with writing Where? Humanities building Reading Success Center – Offers help with reading. Where? Library East Basement.

And finally… Basic Skills classes in English and Math. Absolutely necessary if your language skills prevent you from understanding the lecture or comprehending the textbook and handouts. A strong indication that your language skills are deficient is that you fail the quiz on the syllabus.

Resources Specific to this Class Me! – available at stated times but also often into the afternoon. Non-threatening and non-judgemental. Anthropology Tutor in the Tutoring Center. Ian Mautner – outstanding anthropology student & musician. Where? 2nd Floor Library. Days and times also TBA.

Exams and Make-Ups: Excuses that fall under the make-up policy Death/funeral of close family member. Serious illness of close family member, requiring hospitalization. Illness to self. Important ritual involving self or close family member. Serious auto accident involving injury or trauma. Court appearance.

Excuses that are acceptable, but will only defer taking the test during the specific period in question. Child care crisis. Non-injury accident. Dead battery or flat tire in auto. Other transportation crises (missed bus, friend did not show). In these cases the exam must be taken either later during the scheduled day, or the very next day before the next class meeting..

Excuses that are not acceptable Caring for a relative with a chronic condition (e.g. diabetes). Emergencies involving boyfriends or girlfriends. Family vacations or destination rituals. Routine doctor’s or dentist’s appointments. Illnesses or rituals involving distant relatives, boyfriend’s relatives, etc.

Excuses that are valid, but will usually result in a student failing the class. Relatives’ funeral in a foreign country. Extended illness. Chronic and profound psychological condition. Marital break-up.

Keys to Success Attend Class – Every class you miss will lower your grade on an exam by one grade level. Do the readings. Visit me or the tutor if you don’t understand something
