Operation Dynamo

Battle of the Atlantic

German expansion by 1940

Battle of Britain After Germany’s victories in Eastern Europe & France, there was only one major power left in western Europe to fight….Great Britain. Germany made plans to invade Great Britain. However, Great Britain’s Royal Air Force engaged German forces in defense of the nation. Battle of Britain- largest air assault in history. German air force bombed British cities & industrial centers. Yet, could not force a surrender. Great Britain held their ground until help came from U.S.

Lend-Lease Act Prime Minister Churchill confessed to FDR that Britain was nearly bankrupt and needed more American equipment. Lend-Lease Act: The President could aid any nation whose defense was vital to U.S. security. By the end of WWII, the U.S. had loaned or given away $49 billion of aid to over 40 nations.

Allied Strategy: ABC1 Defeating Germany is top priority Attack in Europe first While Stalin fights Germany in USSR, UK & US use navy/air to take N. Africa  Italy Goal  Force an unconditional surrender

Operation Barbarossa Germany invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941 (launched from Poland) 3-Pronged Attack: Leningrad, Moscow, Kiev  success…..for now….. WINTER!!!! Changes to Soviet Army (modernized, increased use of tanks, artillery, reformed air force, used radio)

How/Why did Blitzkrieg fail?

Operation Barbarossa Outcome USSR declares war Soviets launch counter-offensive at Stalingrad Soviet patriotism and unity (save “Mother Russia”) Motivated by German atrocities Stalin withdrawals himself from military control and allows commanders more freedom (increased confidence and pride in military) USSR lost ¾ its iron, coal and steel, 1/3 of its railways…..but still able to out-produce Germans Shift to wartime economy Aide from US & UK

Operation Barbarossa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyvkKuux04w

Battle of Stalingrad Hitler reached Stalingrad by August 1942 & occupied the city Russians refused to surrender and launched a counter-offensive surrounding Germans in a pincer movement Turning point in the East!!! Germany surrendered  stopped Hitler’s eastern advance 250,000 dead Soviets take the offensive and regain territory

Invasion of North Africa Bernard Montgomery: British commander

El Alamein By 1942, Allies had enough resources to open a second front (Mediterranean) British ships sink 2/3 of German supply ships U.S. lands in Morocco and Algeria War of attrition = retreat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiZshYwqSR4

North African Campaign May 1943: Axis surrender in North Africa Prevented German takeover of Egypt & Suez Canal Restored British confidence and prestige Provided a launching position for next target – Italy Nazi General, Erwin Rommel – “Desert Fox”
