Characterization

*The traits of a character are qualities, Characterization is a method that authors use to give readers clues to a character’s personality. Show not Tell. *The traits of a character are qualities, like bravery or sloppiness. *Major characters are the most important ones, *Minor characters are the less important ones, but they help the major character and help move the plot along.

Physical Appearance deal about characters. Methods of characterization are ways that writers bring their characters to life. Physical Appearance ASK YOURSELF: *What does the character look like? *What are his expressions, gestures, or body language? My Notes : Appearances can tell you a great deal about characters.

Thoughts, Speech, and Actions ASK YOURSELF: *What does the character think, say, or do? *How does he or she treat others? *What kinds of things are important to him or her? My Notes: A character’s words and actions can reveal his or her personality.

Other Characters’ Reactions ASK YOURSELF: *What do others say about the character? *How do they treat each other? My Notes: Characters’ reactions to each other can also serve as clues.

Setting How does the setting influence the characters? The setting, olden times with a cruel society, motivates the princess to find the secret of the doors. How does the setting affect the conflicts? The setting builds the problems because nothing interferes with the justice of the arena.

In Summary… A theme is a life lesson revealed through close reading of an entire text. A theme is developed by the author through the four clues. A theme must be supported with quotes from the text to support the clue. An explanation is needed to connect the text to the theme. Possible theme: Family comes first.
