Rollin Schimmel Memorial Wrestling Foundation Coach Schimmel Touched hundreds of lives, made men out of boys, and coaches out of many of us who watched him Work his wonders with all who surrounded him. We are deeply indebted to Rollin’s incredible depth of humanity, sensitivity and understanding. He will never be forgotten for his traits have been passed on to those who continue to help young people learn life through the great sport of wrestling. From one of Rollin’s many great admirers

Our Mission: Is to provide assistance to community youth in an effort to allow them to reap life-long benefits that are found through participation in the sport of wrestling. The Rollin Schimmel Memorial Wrestling Foundation is committed to improving the sport of wrestling, developing outstanding athletes, and producing quality/educated citizens.  This foundation was the vision of Rollin Schimmel who dedicated himself to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. This foundation is a tribute to him and his determined style that produced many successful student/athletes.

The Foundation 1) Our financial goal is to become a solvent Foundation that gets bigger & bigger. 2) As the principle grows, so will our ability to help more individuals & programs. 3) We are a Foundation that can help Pendleton Wrestling and Community youth for decades under the Schimmel name. 4) We are committed to three main areas: a. Pendleton Kids Wrestling Program b. Higher education for wrestlers c. Special projects for the wrestling community in Pendleton

Rollin died tragically on May 20th, 2006 in a rafting accident on the Klickitat river. He was among friends and living life to the fullest as he always did. He will be fondly remembered for he has had a positive impact on kids and adults for helping them learn life through their experiences. Rollin wished to leave a Foundation that could continue to give kids life experiences and opportunities long after he could no longer do it himself.

Remembering Rollin Teacher – (34 years) Math teacher at Pendleton High School & Winning Attitude Coach – (34 years) Wrestling, Football & Athletic Director. Friend - He was a friend to many who worked with him and or were taught by him. Mentor – His Commitment to his work was something both kids and adults learned from. Community Leader – An active member of several City Clubs and Organizations.

Rollin Schimmel Teacher, Coach, Mentor and Friend In 1969, Rollin had a vision to build one of the state’s top wrestling programs, in Pendleton Oregon. It took Rollin 35 years of hard work but for 25 years now, Pendleton has been one of the most feared and respected programs in the state. His wrestlers have given him over 400 dual meet victories and many Individual state champions. More than the wins themselves, it was about building a winning program and teaching kids to be Winners. Rollin’s efforts and success got him honored with induction into the Oregon & National Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame. He had a special gift of getting the most out of kids and people, plus bringing them together for a goal and to get projects done. In 2004, Rollin organized, financed and constructed, with communities’ help, our new wrestling building. This was done to give kids of all ages a place to practice, which they didn’t have before, and to keep the Vision alive for wrestling in Pendleton. This Building has been named the Schimmel Wrestling Building, in his memory. We take pride in his years of Dedication, Leadership and Vision for the kids in our community. Pendleton will forever build on that foundation he created to teach kids how to be the very best they can be, WINNERS. LET’S KEEP THE VISION ALIVE!!

Community and Kids Rollin was involved with these throughout his entire life in Pendleton. He started as a Teacher & Coach in 1969 plus worked as a Grounds Keeper at the Little League field, for the knights of Pythias. For him, it was about helping kids & the community. He ended as a Mentor, Coach and Past Chancellor Commander / Trustee for the Knights, still helping kids & the community, in 2006. Wrestling was not just a passion for Rollin, he lived wrestling for over 40 years. 1980 PHS Wrestling Team 2006 Kids Wrestling Tournament

COACHES LEARNING FROM COACHES, FOREVER! Delance Duncan & Rollin at the State Tournament in 2006. Delance Coached Rollin on the very 1st Oregon High School Cultural Exchange team to Japan in the 1960’s. 20 years later, Rollin coached a Cultural Exchange team that wrestled in Germany . That 1982 team included two of Rollin’s PHS wrestlers. Dave Boor, who won a state high school championship under Schimmel in 1988, remembers how the coach would motivate his wrestlers. "When you wrestled for him, he wasn't your favorite person because he would play a lot of games with you," said Boor, now the head coach at Riverside. "He did it to mentally prepare you. It worked out because he got the best out of his athletes. I understand what he did a lot more today as a coach."

Fred Phillips has been Pendleton's coach since Schimmel retired again in 2002. He was an assistant during Schimmel's final season. "I've had the privilege to work with one of the greatest coaches in Oregon history," said Phillips. "Over the course of five years, we were friends and he was a mentor to me. He was honest and fair. You may not have agreed with some of the things he did, but the decisions he made were because he wanted what's best for the team." 2006 Pendleton H.S wrestling awards banquet. Picture of kids

Co-workers, friends and family members remember him for the way he carried himself, his love for reaching out to others, and the lessons he taught people of all ages - on and off the mat. Picture of Rollin & Kid Rollin Schimmel did not limit himself to the wrestling venue. No matter what big event was happening in Pendleton, chances were he could be found helping its organizers or just conversing with people. The man enjoyed much success as a high school wrestling coach, but

Pendleton Kids Wrestling Program The Foundation is driven to continue the visions of Rollin Schimmel as outlined in his will, as well as through his writings and conversations with his friends and family. He had three major areas he wanted to help directly with a Foundation. This is how the Foundation Board plans to fulfill our mission. Pendleton Kids Wrestling Program * Funding for summer wrestling camps for kids and high school wrestlers Higher education for wrestlers *Funding for College Scholarships for graduating seniors *Funding for Qualifiers on the Oregon High School Wrestling Cultural Exchange Team. Special projects for the wrestling community in Pendleton *Developing Winners Through Wrestling *Helping and Encouraging all kids *Support Community projects for kids *Continue the Vision started by Rollin

Many Students who were touched by Rollins’ teachings are giving back to our community and other communities, today. Many former wrestlers and students are working and giving back in other ways, than just wrestling, standing strong behind the belief in helping our youth develop into the men and women who will be leading this community and other communities into tomorrow.
