ASSIST Arizona State System for Information on Student Transfer

What is ASSIST? A statewide data warehouse with student records from 10 community college districts and 3 universities … ….that allows institutions to track students as they move through Arizona’s higher education pipeline

Participating Institutions Coconino CC Mohave CC NAU Northland Pioneer College Yavapai College 10 Maricopa Community Colleges ASU Central AZ College AZ Western College Eastern AZ College UA Pima CC Cochise College

History of ASSIST 1996 Transfer Articulation Task Force recommended a tracking system to access the effectiveness of a new transfer model Security policies and agreements Funding Operations (staffing and participation)

History of ASSIST 2017 ASSIST can track over 3 million unique students who have taken over 42 million courses

Security Issues How to Protect Student Privacy (FERPA) Personally identifiable data elements replaced with anonymous ASSIST ID How to Prevent Mis-Use of Data ASSIST to be used solely for research and activities consistent with research, with focus on transfer-related issues

Security Issues How to Retain Institutional Control Individual datamarts created for each institution Institutions can only access the records of students who attended their institution Only employees of the institution’s IR office can obtain authorization to access that institution’s data

How is ASSIST Used? To evaluate transfer effectiveness How many students transferred to a university? How many credit hours were transferred? How many students transferred with an AGEC or an Associate Degree? How many transfer students earned a baccalaureate degree? What majors?

How is ASSIST Used? To analyze academic performance and course-taking behavior of transfers How well did students perform in their first semester after transferring? How well did students do in upper level courses after transferring? What is the graduation rate of students who transferred?

Why Use ASSIST? Allows community colleges to track their students through the transfer process Serves as a valuable decision support tool for institutional policy makers who need answers to help them address curricular reform issues
