Objectives: Students will be able to use conditional sentences and rhetorical questions. Students will be able to sign the vocabulary correctly using MOPSE and be able to interpret the vocabulary when signed in lists and in sentences.

Conditional Sentence and Rhetorical Questions ASL Grammar

Conditional Sentences Conditional Sentences have two parts: the condition and the consequence. The sentences are made by   Raising the eyebrows during the condition (_______if_______ or _____cond_____) and lowering them during the consequence. Optionally the condition may be preceded by either SUPPOSE or #IF.

LEARN SIGN HE WANT/PRACTICE MUST HE.

Let’s look at your worksheets… Conditional Sentences: Conditional sentences have two parts: the condition and the consequence. Optionally the condition may be preceded by either SUPPOSE of #IF. Step 1. Please add glossing marks and underline any signs you do not know in numbers 1-27. Step 2. What signs do we need to review? Step 3. Now lets sign the sentences together. Step 4. Now lets sign them with partners. Move around the room. Sign a sentence to a person… the person responds with the number that corresponds to that sentence.

Rhetorical Questions Rhetorical Questions: WH-question signs can be used as rhetorical questions to draw attention to additional information which the signer will provide. However, rhetorical questions differ from ordinary WH-questions in that the eyebrows are raised instead of squeezed together. ______rq_____, _____rhet-q_______ or _____rhq_____ marks the rhetorical question.

(WHAT-FOR) UNDERSTAND LANGUAGE. 3. CAR I FINISH DECIDE BUY. (WHICH) D-A-T-S-U-N I BUY. 4. HE LECTURE-REPEATEDLHY. (WHAT) HE LECTURE ABOUT C-L-E-R-C, HIMSELF DEAF. 5. I GO-THERE PUT-IN-GAS. (HOW-MUCH) GAS COST 20 DOLLARS. 6. YOU GO-TO-IT CLOSE-DOOR. (WHY) BUG ENTER-REPEADEDLY.

Let’s look at your worksheets… Rhetorical Questions: Rhetorical Questions can be used to draw attention to information. However, rhetorical questions differ from ordinary WH-questions in that the eyebrows are _______________ instead of squeezed together. ___rq___ indicates raised eyebrows for the rhetorical question. Step 1. Please add glossing marks and underline any signs you do not know in numbers 1-9. Step 2. What signs do we need to review? Step 3. Now lets sign the sentences together. Step 4. Now lets sign them with partners. Move around the room. Sign a sentence to a person… the person responds with the number that corresponds to that sentence.

On Your Own… There are 39 signs in this chapter. Create 10 sentences on your own that incorporate at least 20 of the signs from this chapter and use grammar structures from this chapter. Gloss the sentence first underlining the vocabulary used from this chapter, on the next line write out the grammar structure used. Add all glossing marks and double space. For example: __rq__ I ADMIT I LIE WHY? GO PRISON NOT-WANT. (Rhetorical questions add information to the sentence. The signer raises eyebrows on the question word.) You will be signing and translating these 10 sentences in class. Be sure to use only vocabulary we know—do not use www.aslpro.com to look up new signs. Rely on your master vocabulary list only! Make sure you know how to sign each sentence on the due date.

Conditionals: Complete the sentence… 1. Complete the prompt. 2. Work with the partner sitting across from you… Sign your sentence and your partner will voice translate. 3. Once you have signed all 10 of your sentences your partner will sign hers/his to you.

Rhetoricals: Complete the sentence… 1. Complete the prompt. 2. Work with the partner sitting across from you… Sign your sentence and your partner will voice translate. 3. Once you have signed all 16 of your sentences your partner will sign hers/his to you.

Dialogue time… Create a dialogue with your partner in which you use conditional sentences and rhetorical questions. Your dialogue needs a minimum of 5 exchanges. You have 20 minutes to create… then we will sign in groups.

Video Assessment! Choose two (2) sentence from each practice set… two from the conditional set, and 2 from the rhetorical set. Record yourself signing these four sentences, drop in our Google Classroom assignment box. Your video title is your FIRST AND LAST NAME. Do it like this: Ben Baker While signing the sentences you SHOULD TALK and EXPLAIN what you are doing and WHY. See sample:
