Texas Success Initiative (TSI)
What is TSI? Texas Education Code §51.3062 T The law requires all entering Texas college students to be assessed for college readiness in reading, mathematics and writing unless the student qualifies for an exemption Unless exempt, students who are entering a Texas college or university must take a TSI exam and receive a passing score in order to enroll in credit bearing courses
Why does the TSI Matter? For Seniors: If you are planning on attending a Texas college or university, you are required to have passed the TSI unless you are exempt. For Juniors: Important to know what scores on the SAT or ACT are required to be exempt from TSI. Also, taking the TSI your junior year allows you to complete a college requirement ahead of time. Finally, if you do not pass every section of the TSI you can retake it next year as a senior. For Sophomores: While you will not be taking the TSI, unless you are applying for dual credit, it is important to start thinking about what will be required of you as well as to understand what exemptions exist in order to avoid having to take the TSI as seniors.
Steps for taking the TSI If students have not already done so, they must independently create an Apply Texas account and apply to El Paso Community College at least 4 weeks prior to TSI exam.
