What is the Florida State Assessment? The *NEW* Florida State Standards call for a new assessment. The FSA will show whether or not a student is mastering the new standards. State Standardized Test for ELA and Math 3rd grade reading—Paper Based 4th and 5th grade reading—Computer Based 3rd-5th grade math—Computer Based 4th grade writing—Paper Based 5th grade Science—Paper Based Students are no longer taking the FCAT.

4th and 5th Grade Writing FSA will be February 27th Students must read and understand the prompt Read the 2-3 sources given to them Identify if they want the students to inform the reader or share their opinion Write a 5 paragraph essay in which the prompt was addressed at all times Points are deducted when the students write off- topic Work on Grammar conventions (punctuation, capital letters, etc.)

5th Grade Science The Statewide Science Assessment measures student achievement of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in science. Students in grades 5 and 8 participate in the statewide science assessment. Achievement Levels for Science were established in 2012 through a standard-setting process. This assessment is also computer based.

How can I prepare my child for the FSA? Use Technology (Reading Plus/Waggle) Time all home learning assignments Ask your child questions. Make sure your child is using TEXT EVIDENCE. Review multiplication and division tables. -Reading and comprehension questions can be in English OR Spanish. Use technology to help reinforce skills being taught in the classroom. Read with your child EVERY night, at least 20-30 min. Use the FSA Task cards to ask them questions about what is being read. Ask your child questions about what he or she is learning in class. Make sure you child is going back into the text to answer reading comprehension questions. Review the TIMES TABLES and DIVISION TABLES daily. You can practice in the car, at breakfast, at the store.

English Language Arts (ELA) Tips- What to do with your child Consistent reading every night. •20 -30 minutes of Reading per day! ANY Reading is good! Ask about what they are reading Ask them to explain their homework Focus on vocabulary in context. Ask them to tell you what the more difficult words on what they are reading mean. Make sure they are practicing reading at home using WAGGLE.

Multi-Select Items For these items, choose more than one correct answer from the answer choices, and fill in the bubbles for more than one correct answer. Be sure to read the item carefully to know how many correct answers to choose.
Graphic Response Items For these items, enter the response by drawing lines between matching words or phrases. Drawing lines is the correct way to enter the answer ONLY for the items that ask to do this.
Editing Tasks For editing items, choose the correct word or phrase to fill in each blank in a passage. For each blank, fill in the bubble before the correct word or phrase. If they write their answer in the blank but do not fill in the bubble, their answer will not be scored.
Two-Part Items For these items they are to enter their response to two related questions. The two parts of the item may be either multiple-choice (one correct answer) or multi- select (more than one correct answer, so they have to be sure to read the item carefully to know how many correct answers to choose.
Question Types Math Ask students to show their work. Students should be able to explain how they arrived at the final answer. Students should closely read all word problems to better understand the task. Students should underline or circle key words and numbers in words problems. Help students follow these steps: What I need to find? What information do I need to use? How will I use the information? Solve the problems Explain your answer.

The Night Before the FSA? What do I do… The Night Before the FSA? Make sure your child gets enough sleep. The Morning of the FSA? Eat a normal breakfast. Talk to your child and motivate them! Arrive at school early.
