Togoland By Luke Bartholomeou

Imperial ruler was Germany 5th July 1884 – 27th December 1916 Germany used Togoland as a bargaining chip to get control of the Solomon islands and Tonga They used Togoland for territorial purposes

Positive Effects of Imperialism Economic Development Education A good Infrastructure

Negative Effects of Imperialism Literacy rates were low. Infant mortality rates were high They were now controlled by European powers that did not take their quality of life into consideration

Togoland became independent on April 27th 1960 How/When did your Countr gain independence? British Togoland voted to join the Gold Coast as part of the new independent nation of Ghana in 1957 Sylvanus Olympio was voted leader because they rejected Grunitzky’s Togolese progress party. Togoland became independent on April 27th 1960 Renamed the Republic of Togo

Sylvanus Olympio UN supervised general election was held on 27 April 1958, the first election was held in Togo with universal suffrage, which was won by the opposition pro-independence CUT and its leader Sylvanus Olympio. who became Prime Minister. On 13 October 1958 the French government announced that full independence would be granted

Economic results of imperialism modern farms and mining. modern port facilities Modern railways

Political results of imperialism African territories gained independence. The governments were not stable and war broke out all over the continent. The political boundaries which European monarchies established.

Social results of imperialism The status of women is improving subject to legal and social restrictions. A husband may deny his wife the right to work and has legal control over her earnings. Women face discrimination in employment and access to education. A wife has no financial rights in a divorce and no inheritance rights upon the death of her husband. Polygamy is practiced.

Where would you country be know and was imperialism good/bad. I think that the German imperialism of Togoland was more good then bad for them, because they didn’t really change many of their everyday lives except made them work a lot harder they had railways, Economic Development, Education, A good Infrastructure, I think that Togoland would not be were it is without German imperialism because they wouldn’t have changed or known what they could do, also they didn’t have the money or the connections that the Germans did.
