L2 Motivation

Maggie Kubanyiova University of Birmingham Motivation and vision in the language classroom: Helping students to ‘taste’ their L2 future in classroom talk Maggie Kubanyiova University of Birmingham

Motivation and Imagination

The Motivational Power of Vision “Vision is the motivating force behind everything we do. You can never say to someone ‘let’s motivate ourselves’ because motivation is simply a bi-product of the transference of vision. If I can ‘see’ something great, I’ll do anything I can to see it come to pass. Vision gives birth to commitment, enthusiasm, energy and discipline.” (Gilpin 2006: 24)

Dörnyei, Z. , & Kubanyiova, M. (2014) Dörnyei, Z., & Kubanyiova, M. (2014). Motivating learners, motivating teachers: Building vision in the language classroom. Cambridge University Press. Students are unlikely to desire their L2 future, unless they have tasted it

Providing regular tasters of desired future states Participation in intercultural exchanges, meetings or campaigns, face to face or online Inviting L2 speakers to the language class Having a video conference with students from another country Working on a class project involving communication with other L2 speakers around the world Visiting an international company or university society School exchanges, study-abroad trips and field visits …

Classroom Talk: Opportunities for Tasting the L2 Future

Aya: A Japanese learner of English (L2) “Well, as we practised together and I really got into it, and my partner was laughing. And I thought, ‘This is good’ ... First we were not close …, but when we were paired up, and as we practised, she was laughing. And I thought, ‘Wow, she is laughing’. We have become closer and we talk often now. That was a good experience” (Ogawa, in progress)

Marilyn King: Envision Your Gold

What kind of world do you want to live in and how does your knowledge of L2 figure in it?
