Building Background This article discusses the history and controversy surrounding the federal minimum wage. Page 1 presents information about the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. This controversial law was passed at the end of a long effort by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to improve conditions for workers. It established a federal minimum wage for the first time. Then, on page 2, you will read two letters to the editor that reflect opinions about the federal minimum wage debate today.

Thought Question You will compare arguments for and against the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 with today's arguments for and against an increase in the federal minimum wage. Think about minimum wage laws and the issues surrounding their development as you read the texts in the lesson. Fill the Venn Diagram to identify the similarities and differences. (Found In Canvas) You will explain which parts of the minimum wage debate are the same today as they were during Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration. After you write your Thought Question drafts, click on Finish Later so you can modify your responses at a later for homework or in class.

Now you will go on Achieve 3000 and Complete Steps 1 – Before reading poll AND 2- Close read #1.
