Lab Safety

Why is Lab Safety Important? Lab safety is a major aspect of every lab based science class. Lab safety rules and symbols are needed so that you do not injure yourself or your classmates.

Lab Safety Rules 1. Always follow the teacher’s directions and only do lab work when a teacher is present. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times. No Horseplay! Be Prepared for lab work. Read all procedures before beginning the lab. Keep your work areas clean and tidy.

Lab Safety Rules 5. Do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials until told to do so. 6. Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the lab. Do not use lab glassware as food or beverage containers 7. Report ALL accidents to your teacher immediately, even if you think it is minor.

Clothing Wear: Do NOT Wear: Sandals Goggles/safety glasses Jewelry Closed-toed shoes Clothing made of natural based fiber such as cotton Tie back long hair Do NOT Wear: Sandals Jewelry Loose or Baggy clothing

Chemical Safety If a chemical should splash in your eye(s) or on your skin, immediately flush with running water for at least 20 minutes.  Immediately (and loudly) yell out the teacher's name to get the teacher's attention.  Never put your nose into the container!

Chemical Safety Check the label on all chemical bottles twice before removing any of the contents.  Take only as much chemical as you need. Never return unused chemicals to their original container Never remove chemicals or other materials from the laboratory area.

Lab Safety Equipment -Preventative Gloves Fume Hood Safety Glasses You

Lab Safety Equipment -Emergency Fire Extinguisher Fire Blanket Safety Shower Eye Wash

Some Common Lab Safety Symbols Found in Textbooks See page xiii of Biology 12U textbook.

WHMIS Symbols for Hazardous Materials Compressed Gas Flammable & Combustible Material Any substance that will burn if exposed to an open flame.

WHMIS Symbols for Hazardous Materials Oxidizing Material Poisonous & Infectious Material causing other Toxic Effects – A substance that can lead to death if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed by the skin.

WHMIS Symbols for Hazardous Materials Biohazardous Infectious Material Corrosive Material

WHMIS Symbols for Hazardous Materials Dangerously Reactive Material Poisonous & Infectious Material Causing Immediate and Serious Toxic Effects

Accidents & Injuries Report ALL accidents and injuries to your teacher immediately!!! Be aware of safety hazards associated with each chemical you use. Eye accident – Wash the eye with copious amounts of water for at least 15 min. Fire Burns – Stop, Drop, and be covered with a fire blanket or soaked with water. Do not remove clothing stuck to victim. Get medical attention immediately.

Waste Disposal First ask your teacher where/how to dispose of waste. Never pour anything down the drain unless you are told to do so. A waste bottle will be supplied for substance that cannot go down the drain

Reasons for proper waste disposal Hazardous chemicals down the drain can lead to pollution of ground water, lakes, rivers, etc. Plants and animals will die if they are exposed to hazardous chemical waste. Serious health problems will become present in people if hazardous waste finds its way into drinking water.

Question: You are designing an investigation and one of the materials you plan to use in it bears the following symbols: Describe the safety precautions you would need to incorporate into your investigation.

How to Light a Bunsen Burner Check rubber tubing for any breaks or holes Place Bunsen burner on a heat mat. Make sure Bunsen burner is located in a safe position Away from edge of the desk and papers. Close the air hole. Tie hair back and tuck in any loose clothing. Light the match (directed away from yourself) before the gas is turned on. Adjust the flame so it is on safety flame.
