Sustainable Curitiba

4.1 How can cities throughout the world be classified? * Size * Rate of growth * Level of development 4.2 What pressures currently confront cities and how are they changing them? * Transport and communications * Disparities in wealth * Areal extent * Quality of environment 4.3 What attempts have been made to find sustainable solutions to problems faced by cities? Strategies to deal with 4.4 How sustainable are cities? * Draw together above ideas to critically assess attitudes towards the sustainability of cities

Curitiba: Desire vs. Reality Goal: Cover the entire city with a subway system Goal: Could only afford single LRT line Design “surface subway” system using buses to get network up and running Problem: Solution:

Curitiba: Transit/Land Use Goal: Ensure land uses support transit investments. Goal: Viability of transit depends on density. Require virtually all density to be located within one block of mainline corridors. Problem: Solution:

Curitiba: Buses and Roads Goal: Make buses run faster. Buses always get stuck in traffic. Create bus-only “roads within roads,” with traffic signal priority, both reducing running time and making the system more reliable. Problem: Solution:

Curitiba—Speedy Network Goal: Reduce transit trip times. Longer trips involve many stops. Create an overlay network of “speedy” buses directly linking major transfer centers and demand generators, thereby cutting 30 minutes off average trip. Problem: Solution:

Curitiba—Implementation Goal: Problem: Extend “rapid” transit services as quick as possible Goal: Need to keep capital costs low Bus-based system “colonizing” existing rights-of-way has led to extra-ordinarily rapid system expansion Problem: Solution: 74 79 84 Solution: 89 94 97

Curitiba—Increasing Capacity Goal: Increase bus capacity. Buses can’t compete capacity-wise with rail. Have Volvo build 260-passenger double-articulated buses. Problem: Solution:
