The Media and Your Self-Esteem Chapter 3 Lesson 1 Self-Esteem and Your Life The Media and Your Self-Esteem The media tends to show only people who are very successful or glamorous. The media also tends to show only people who are unusually thin or muscular. Some people may compare themselves to the people they see in the media. This comparison can cause a person to develop an unhealthy body image. Body image is the way you see and imagine your body.

Self-Concept and Self-Esteem Chapter 3 Lesson 2 Your Self-Concept Self-Concept and Self-Esteem Self-concept is a building block of self-esteem. Self-concept is the way you see and imagine yourself as a person. Your self-concept can affect your self-esteem. For example, if you see yourself as an artist, you may choose to think to yourself, “I like to draw, and I am good at it. This makes me feel more confident about myself.”
