Bessie's arrival Bessie's arrival shows how far Jane had grown and transitioned over the years. She's starting a new adventure with positive memories. The social class is demonstrated through the hard work of the lower class. Because Jane had to work harder for her success, she came out on top. The upper class has everything handed to them, so they don't work for anything. They don't improve or get better.

Jane's decision Jane leaves Lowood because she wanted more out of life and she did not want to be tied down to to one place for her whole life. This decision is not surprising because ever since she was young she craved Liberty. Since Jane was poor, she sees the opportunity to better herself and become successful. This is her chance to break free from her lower class status. "What do I want? A new place, in a new house, amongst new faces, under new circumstances: I want this because it is of new use wanting anything better." Chapter 10 pg 82

Authors views Mr.Brocklehurst thinks everyone should be plain because their social class says they should not expect more. Since they're poor orphans, they should not exceed this standards. The visit is ironic because Mr.Brocklehurst's children do not agree with how the plain the school is. His family comes in with nice, fancy clothes because they're a higher social class. Their standards are to look nice. The kids at Lowood will value money more. This shows how during the Victorian Era everybody had their role and couldn't stray from that. The authors view showed how people can exceed their roles and do more. Your social class and what you're born in doesn't limit you.

Quote "You are aware that my plan in bringing up these girls is, not to accustom them to habits of luxury and independence, but to render them hardy, patient, self-denying." - Mr. Brocklehurst (chapter 7, pg 60)
