Decolonization After WWII, European empires began to unravel their control of the Middle East Countries that gained independence during this time included Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. Israel declared independence when the British withdrew from Palestine in 1948.
