Convegno AIDB Trieste – June 19, 2009 STN Analysis and Visualization Tools to improve Competitive Intelligence Information Convegno AIDB Trieste – June 19, 2009

Agenda An introduction to competitive intelligence STN features for better competitive intelligence STN applications for better competitive intelligence Competitive intelligence case studies

Effective CI is a continuous cycle with a few well-defined steps Planning & direction: discovering the intelligence needs of decision makers Collection: searching online Analysis: compiling and interpreting data Dissemination: reporting results Feedback: reacting to the responses of decision makers Timeliness: updating needed intelligence

Understanding what is needed is the first and most important step Define scope and breadth of the search request Determine the final user of the information Choose the databases for conducting the search and analysis Multifile search approach Transferring (patent) answers to database with the systematic indexing for more consistent analysis Best starting point Certain technology or relevant chemical compound Certain company, research institute, or authors

STN provides the tools for better competitive intelligence Online commands that provide more comprehensive search results Online thesauri for technology terms and organization names Online commands to analyze and provide two-dimensional charts Software designed to provide clearer analysis and visualization of data

STN commands provide more comprehensive search results Flexible truncation using Simultaneous Left and Right Truncation in Basic Index and additional fields in many databases Lexicon and other thesauri to find related terminology (narrower, broader, related terms) Index terms, IPC & Derwent Manual codes, Company names, etc. Convenient SET commands

STN software helps understand and interpret search results STN Express® provides data grouping with the ANALYZE Plus wizard and post-processing with reports and tables STN® AnaVist™ provides interactive research landscape and additional charting options STN® ViewerTM provides patent full text for results of a patent database search

Use the right tool for the question being asked Company or Technology Information Patent Analysis Substance Online Commands Document retrieval & simple statistics STN Express Analyze wizard Number of documents per company or technology Key players and cross-tabulations of two fields Substitution patterns on a core structure STN AnaVist Research focus, strategy, collaborations Key players, trends and patent activity Research trends and applications of substances STN Viewer In-depth analysis of full text Visualization of key words in full text Names in full text On patent analysis: Note that you can also see the areas that a company is forsaking, as well as entering On substance analysis: Note that VGAT in express provides a complementary tool for the application & trend analysis in AnaVist. Make it clear that AnaVist doesn’t deal with structure information (yet).

The grid display shows companies in rows and years in columns PY ------------------------------------------------------ PA 2009 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000 1999 ------------------------- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- USA 5 65 80 67 76 71 48 43 12 12 5 PEOP REP CHINA 0 6 11 14 6 4 2 2 2 3 2 THE PROCTER GAMBLE 2 9 13 6 15 14 17 17 11 8 2 COMPANY USA SCHERING CORPORATION USA 3 14 15 11 14 14 13 7 7 5 3 NITROMED INC USA 4 10 12 10 10 7 2 1 0 1 0 ROHTO PHARMACEUTICAL CO 1 1 5 4 2 0 5 3 2 1 0 LTD JAPAN PFIZER PRODUCTS INC USA 2 2 6 9 14 12 12 8 5 1 0 LION CORP JAPAN 1 0 1 0 4 3 2 2 3 2 0 PANACEA BIOTEC LTD INDIA 4 7 12 0 2 0 1 2 1 0 1 TAISHO PHARMACEUTICAL CO 0 2 1 2 2 3 3 5 5 0 5 MERCK CO INC USA 2 7 9 10 5 4 1 2 3 3 2 COMBINATORX INCORPORATED 0 6 6 4 2 3 1 1 0 0 0 USA PHARMACIA CORPORATION USA 0 0 2 5 9 7 3 0 0 0 0 CAN 0 2 3 3 5 2 1 1 0 0 0 FOAMIX LTD ISRAEL 0 9 9 8 8 5 0 0 0 0 0 2-D analysis: Can compare PA and PY. PA is sorted by descending document count. PY is sorted by descending years.

Analyze Plus exports analysis result to Excel with a link back to STN Express 8.4 The interactive worksheets let you display records in STN.

STN AnaVist provides an interactive environment for uncovering new relationships in your answer set Default display windows: Key Organizations Documents Research Landscape Key Researchers by Publication Year Trends Size of answer set Fee 2-1,000 (Level 1) $245.00 1,001-5,000 (Level 2) $515.00 5,001-20,000 (Level 3) $910.00 Document Display (per document) Database Fee CAplus $3.00 EPFULL $1.56 PCTFULL $1.56 USPAT2 $2.20 USPATFULL $2.20 WPINDEX $7.14

STN Viewer allows you to evaluate the relevance of your patent answers more quickly and effectively through multi-colored highlighting STN truncation symbols are available for highlighting terms. NOTE: Percent symbol (%) represents one or more numeric characters.

Summary – Analysis tools help to better manage large sets of results Use ANALYZE online to provide simple and fast listings of a single field Use STN Express with ANALYZE PLUS to provide detailed analysis on one or two fields Use STN AnaVist to better understand large sets of answers, identify trends, and look for correlation between multiple fields Use STN Viewer to identify desirable terminology in full-text documents
