DNA Replication

Recall: 1. G-1 phase 2. S phase (what happens here?) 3. G-2 phase 4. Mitosis 5. Cytokinesis

DNA must be duplicated before cells reproduce. Each new cell gets an exact copy of parent DNA.

Replication The process by which DNA is copied; makes an exact copy of original DNA

Steps in Replication 1. The helix is unwound by enzyme- DNA helicase. 2. The molecule “unzips” or splits apart between base pairs at replication fork.

3. Base pairs, sugars, and phosphates from cytoplasm come in to take place of old; aided by enzyme DNA polymerase 4. End result: one side of DNA is old, one side is new.

DNA Replication Example: 1. DNA Strand: TCGTATTAA 2. Give the complementary strand 1. TCG TAT TAA 2. AGC ATA ATT
