Disgraceful Deeds Genesis 34 Lesson #1-Home Is Where the Lord Is Lesson #2-Chaperone Your Children Lesson #3-It Is a Wicked, Wicked World Lesson #4-The Righteous Also Sin The Big Idea: God Does Not Give Up 1

Disgraceful Deeds Genesis 34 Lesson #1-Home Is Where the Lord Is Home is not where the heart is! Most importantly, it is where the Lord is! Why does Jacob go to Succoth and Shechem – Genesis 33? Where was he to go – Gen. 31:13; 28:20-22? 2

Genesis 31:13 (NASB) 13  I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar, where you made a vow to Me; now arise, leave this land, and return to the land of your birth.’”

Genesis 28:20-22 (NASB) 20  Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I take, and will give me food to eat and garments to wear,  21  and I return to my father’s house in safety, then the Lord will be my God.  22  This stone, which I have set up as a pillar, will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”

After “being” both Jacob and Israel, the result is Genesis 34, which leads to Genesis 35:1. 2

Disgraceful Deeds Genesis 34 Lesson #2-Chaperone Your Children What was Dinah looking for – Genesis 34:1? Was Jacob where he should have been? What was the example he had given? Where is Jacob during this whole process? Why are his sons running the family? “He doth protest too little” – Genesis 34:30 3

Disgraceful Deeds Genesis 34 Lesson #3-It Is a Wicked, Wicked World We live in a world where we come to terms too easily with our sin. Shechem loves Dinah – Genesis 34:3? God calls this a disgrace – Genesis 34:7. There is not a hint of wrong doing nor an apology on Hamor’s or Shechem’s part, the so called good people – Genesis 34:8-10. 4

Disgraceful Deeds Genesis 34 Lesson #4-The Righteous Also Sin Unbelievers do not have a monopoly on wickedness. Are not the actions of Jacob’s sons worse? They exact vengeance to satisfy ego and pride, all in the name of religion – Genesis 34:14-17. They exaggerate, using the word prostitute, while prostituting the sign of the covenant. 5

Disgraceful Deeds Genesis 34 The Big Idea: God Does Not Give Up No one in Genesis 34 appears in a favorable light. Jacob leaves the area in fear and without the words to even reprove his sons but … God continues to work on Jacob and never gives up on him – Genesis 49:5-7. 6

Genesis 49:5-7 (NASB) 5  “Simeon and Levi are brothers; Their swords are implements of violence. 6  “Let my soul not enter into their council; Let not my glory be united with their assembly; Because in their anger they slew men, And in their self-will they lamed oxen. 7  “Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; And their wrath, for it is cruel. I will disperse them in Jacob, And scatter them in Israel.”

Disgraceful Deeds Genesis 34 Application Is your home where the Lord is? Are you leading your home and your children the way God would have you lead them? Do you come to terms with your sin too easily? Are you using your belief system or are you serving within it? 7
