Presentation transcript:

Before Thanksgiving Assignment Read and outline ch. 12 on DNA – this should be summarized notes on each section of the chapter. Each section should have a title and be underlined. All vocabulary words should be defined Main points about each section or sub-section should be in a bulleted list Also answer the following questions: What are the 3 roles of DNA? What are the chemical components of DNA? What does a double helix look like? What does the double-helix model tell us about DNA? What role does DNA polymerase play in copying DNA

FQ: What are the chemical components that make up a DNA molecule? DNA Structure 12.2 pg. 344 FQ: What are the chemical components that make up a DNA molecule? Entry task: What are the Roles of DNA? Storing information Copying information Transmitting information

DNA Structure How were each of the following people involved in discovering the structure of DNA? Watson and Crick: Roslyn Franklin: Wilkins: Chargoff:

What does DNA look like? Observe the picture below and describe its structure/shape If you say the structure looks like _____. Create a diagram to compare the two.

Lets Explore DNA structure by building a model With a partner (or alone), answer the following questions: Nucleotide – What are the parts? Nitrogen Bases – How many are there? What are their names? How do they pair up? What type of sugar is in DNA?

FQ: What are the steps in DNA replication? 12.2 DNA Base Pairing FQ: What are the steps in DNA replication? Entry Task: (refer to your model) What are the four nitrogenous bases that make up the steps of the DNA ladder? How do these base pairs pair up?

Nucleotides – Monomers for Nucleic acids Made of a phosphate, Sugar (ribose or deoxyribose), nitrogenous base

Nitrogenous Bases: 4 Adenine Guanine Cytosine Thymine Q: How do they pair up? AT & GC Lets practice it

EUKARYOTES In Humans

Chromosome Structure Chromosomes contain Chromatin which is DNA that is wrapped around Histone proteins. Histones and DNA clump together to form Nucleosomes. Nucleosomes can rearrange to make a gene available to “read”.

DNA Replication Each strand of the DNA double helix has all the information needed to make the other half by base pairing. Because each strand can be used to copy or replicate the other strand, the strands are said to be complementary.

DNA Replication Enzymes unzip the DNA double helix – this can happen at multiple points along the DNA strand at one time Each strand is template for the new DNA strand DNA Polymerase moves along the strand bring new DNA nucleotides to their matching bases. It also “proof- reads” each new strand. Video

Lets build a human model and replicate it! Division of roles Narrator: leads the replication steps Helicase DNA Poly. Base pairs
