LABORATORY and SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

Beaker Tongs Pick up and hold hot items like a Beaker.

Beaker May be heated Used to hold or mix chemicals

Buret Precision measurement of liquids, Acids/Base Titrations.

Bunsen Burner (& Striker) Controls release of natural gas for burning. Tubing connects to gas source. Striker with flint is used to ignite the burner

Clay or Ceramic Triangle Supports a crucible or evaporating dish on a ring stand apparatus.

Crucible and Lid(Cover) Holds small amounts of chemicals for heating at high temperatures.

Crucible Tongs Pick up and hold small, hot items like a Crucible.

Watch Glass (#28) Used as a beaker cover Can be used to place small amounts of chemicals on (looks like a contact lens)

Buret Clamp Holds 1 or 2 burets to a ring stand for dispensing/ titration purposes

Erlenmeyer Flask May be heated Used for mixing chemicals

Evaporating Dish Holds small volumes of liquids being evaporated.

Funnel Holds filter paper for filtering solutions. Transferring liquids to smaller narrow necked containers.

Goggles Most important piece of lab equipment Protects eyes from broken glass, chemicals, and flames.

Graduated Cylinder Measures volumes of liquids

Ring Clamp One side clamps to ring stand. Place wire gauze on ring and it will hold beakers and flasks for heating. Can hold small beakers or funnels.

Ring Stand Multi-purpose, mostly used as a support to heat chemicals and hold burets.

Rubber Stopper Covers test tube for mixing, covers any open container, can be used as sink plugs too.

Scoopula Used to transfer solids from one container to another

Stirring Rod Glass rod used for stirring BE CAREFUL! They break easily

Test Tube Brush Used to clean the inside of Test tubes and other narrow-necked glassware

Test Tube Holder DUHHHHH It holds a test tube

Test Tube Rack Holds test tubes in a vertical position. Allows for clear sight. Drying rack

Test Tube May be heated Holding small amounts of chemicals For small reactions

Thermometer Takes temperature (in Celsius)

Test Tube Clamp Special Clamp used to secure and hold a test tube on a ring stand

Reagent Bottle (Extra Credit possibility; How Do You Use It?) Hold a solution or liquid mixture for dispensing

Plastic Wash Bottle Dispenses water for rinsing equipment

Wire Gauze Spreads out the heat produced by a Bunsen burner Can place a beaker on top

Pipette (may be glass or plastic) Used for measuring very small volumes of liquids

Electronic Balance (not on worksheet) Measures mass in grams
