Data Collection and Analysis Chapter 1 Data Collection and Analysis

The Metric System The metric system (International System of Units) is used when describing experiments and data. Based on multiples of 10.

Length The basic unit of length is the meter (m)

Metric Units of Length 1 meter (m) = 10 decimeters (dm) 1 dm = 1x10-1 m (1/10) 1 m = 100 centimeters (cm) 1 cm = 1x10-2 m (1/100) 1 m = 1,000 millimeters (mm) 1 mm = 1x10-3 m (1/1000) 1 m = 1,000,000 micrometers (μm) 1 μm = 1x10-6 m (1/1,000,000)

Metric Units of Length 1 m = 1,000,000,000 nanometers (nm) 1 nm = 1x10-9 m (1/1,000,000,000) 10 m = 1 dekameter (dam) 100 m = 1 hectameter (hm) 1000 m = 1 kilometer (km) 1,000,000 m = 1 megameter (Mm) 1,000,000,000 m = 1 gigameter (Gm)

Volume Amount of space an object occupies. Metric Units are the Liter (L) for liquids. Metric Units are cubic centimeters (cc or cm3) for solids.

Mass The amount of matter in an object. Metric measurement is the kilogram (kg). Small objects are measured in grams (g). 1 kg = 1000 g 1g = 1000 mg

Temperature Metric system uses the Celsius scale Water freezes at 0ºC and boils at 100ºC Body temperature is 37 ºC

Time Time is measured in seconds

Accuracy vs. Precision Accuracy = How close a measured value is to the true value. Precision = How close the measured values are to each other. High accuracy, high precision High accuracy, low precision Low accuracy, high precision
