3 - Units Other Than Length

Chemists make usually make only four different types of basic measurements: Chemists make usually make only four different types of basic measurements: mass, volume, temperature, time What are they? Do you remember the recipe lesson? What are the most common metric units of….? mass grams volume liters temperature degrees Celcius time seconds

a quart – like the milk bottle. The easiest unit to visualize is the liter because it is slightly more than a quart – like the milk bottle. How much more is slightly more? What is the abbreviated notation for this equation? 1.000 liter = 1.057 quarts 1.000 L = 1.057 qts. 1.000 liter = 1.057 quarts The other common metric unit of volume is the milliliter which, as you might imagine, is 10-3 L Approximately how big is this? It is about 20 drops of water

( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) The meaning of the kilogram is a little more subtle, but it’s weight on earth is 2.20 lb. What is the factor for converting between kilograms and pounds? What is the factor for converting between kilograms and grams? What is the second step? What is the third step? What is the fourth step? What is the next part of the fourth step? And the final answer is? What is the weight of the kilogram in outer space? What is the first step? Can we calculate the weight of the gram on earth? Write the units of the desired answer on the right of the future equation. There are g in the numerator, so write the conversion factor with g in the denominator. Now, there are kg in the numerator, so write the conversion factor with kg in the denominator. Write the given quantity on the left of the future equation. In outer space, the kilogram is weightless. We can! Write the relevant conversion factors, or as many as you can think of. ( ) 2.20 lb. 1 kg ( ) 1 kg. 1000 g ( ) 1 kg. 1000 g ( ) 2.20 lb. 1 kg 1 g = .0022 lb.
