It might sound improbable but it’s true! Origin of the meter Just a few years after the French Revolution of 1789 the French Academy of Sciences defined the meter as 1/10 000 000 of the distance between the North Pole and the Equator. What is the approximate distance around the Earth in km/miles? 10 000 000 m Today over 100 bronze medallions can be seen marking the original line through Paris. 40 000 000 m = 40 000 km 5/8 x 40 000 = 25 000 miles It might sound improbable but it’s true! In 1884 at a conference in Washington and with much French resistance, the Greenwich meridian was adopted as the world’s Prime Meridian.
