Architectural Styles Project Ardrey Kell High School Charlotte, NC Dutch Colonial

Architectural Style: Dutch Colonial History: The first Dutch Colonial houses built in the United States were part of the Colonial Revival period of architecture in the early 1900’s. Dutch Colonial homes provide a wide variety of elevations due to their basic construction, making them easily customizable. Like the American Foursquare, variations of the Dutch Colonial home were available for order from the Sears Catalog. Because of its gambrel style roof, Dutch Colonial homes typically can be built for less money than a two story house of the same square footage. This is because less material is needed for exterior walls

Architectural Style: Dutch Colonial Characteristics: Dutch Colonial homes are 1 ½ stories structures with a gambrel roof, and a variety of dormer options for the front and rear of the house. B. True Dutch Colonial homes also have a flare at the bottom of the roof which provides a large overhang at the bottom of the roof. C. Many Dutch Colonial homes have the main entry on the side of the house. (See the example on the next slide). D. Veneers are usually Clapboard siding, cedar shake, or a combination of brick and siding/shakes. E. Dutch Colonial homes usually have doors centered on the front elevation. F. The porch on a Dutch Colonial home frequently runs the entire length of the front of the house. G. Side elevations are usually highlighted by large windows.

Examples of Dutch Colonial Architecture Door on Side Elevation Notice the variety of elevations available for Dutch Colonial Homes. Also pay attention to the similarities and differences in each model pictured.
