Semester in Development Study, Intern, Travel

Background Insight is a Canadian based social enterprise The Semester in Development runs Fall/Winter/Summer terms in Kampala, Uganda Term long (12 weeks) Program Combines Studying – 1 day a week, earning 6 upper division credits Interning – 4 days a week, with a relevant NGO Travelling – Living in Uganda and exploring the region

Program Details Summer Program June to August (12 weeks) Pre/post-program and weekend/reading week travel options Safari Nile Rafting Rwanda/Kenya/Tanzania etc.

Study @ Makerere University Enroll in two courses at Makerere University (one of Africa’s most prestigious institutions) SSP 7204: Conflict, Recovery and Reconciliation SSP 7011: Social Movements in Africa These are all examples, specific course offerings are determined on a per-term basis, heavily dependent on student interest 2-3 hour classes, seminar format Credits transfer to Carleton on a Letter of Permission 0.5 credit per course (1 total) BGINS students earn additional 0.5 credit for placement

Working as an intern Work in the field with an organization that interests you, and, is relevant to what you study Maximum of two program participants per organization Work 4 days a week 9-5, some weekends and some fieldwork (depending on partner) Examples of partners (we have almost 30 community partners) Reproductive Health Uganda Refugee Law Project Uganda Youth Development Link (UYDEL) Straight Talk Foundation Youth Sport Uganda

Living in Kampala Uganda’s capital Vibrant community with a population of around 3 million In Kampala you’ll be living with other students as a part of the program (cohort) Rented locally run apartments (photos online) Located in a convenient and safe neighbourhood 24/7 security Access to a fully functioning kitchen and fridge

You’ll gain valuable work experience and develop in-demand hard and soft skills You’ll have the opportunity to learn from leading Ugandan academics Carleton students earn 0.5 upper credits per course (1.0 credits total) of upper division credits You’ll begin to understand what it’s really like to live and work in a developing country You’ll have the opportunity to travel to some truly amazing places before, during or after the program You get to do this all in one program

European Exchange Program according to AUCC (1 term) $8,500 Remember… You don’t have to pay for rent You don’t have to pay for tuition or textbooks Food/drink/mostly everything is cheaper in Uganda! Participants will be given assistance to find grants, raise funds, and off-set costs

How to Apply Online via our website Select ‘University – Uganda’ and then look for ‘Apply Now’ tabs We have a policy of interviewing everyone that takes the time to apply Summer Application deadline – Early February, 2017 BGINS – Must apply by December 2nd to BGInS department to do summer placement Interviews conducted on a rolling basis You can apply anytime for the program between now and Feb 2017 for the summer cohort We accept on a rolling basis, typically within one week of applying you receive a decision from us as to your candidacy
