Temperature Kelvin

Is the measure of the hotness or coldness of a body. ℃ = K – 273.15 The SI unit for temperature.

Absolute Zero Thermometer

0 Kelvin. -273.15 ℃ Temperature at which molecules are at their lowest energy state. An instrument used to measure temperature. It uses a particular thermometric property.

Thermometric Property Thermocouple

Any physical property that changes measurably with temperature. A device used to measure temperature. It uses the thermometric property – EMF (electromotive force) Greater the temperature difference between two junctions, greater the EMF. Temperature of one junction kept at fixed temperature. Any physical property that changes measurably with temperature.

Mercury in Glass Thermometer Resistance Thermometer

Instrument used to measure temperature and relies on the thermometric property of resistance. Metal: When temperature increases, resistance increases. Semiconductor: When temperature increases, resistance decreases. Instrument used to measure temperature and relies on the thermometric property of length of column of liquid. When the temperature increases, the length of liquid in the column increases.

Clinical Thermometer Thermostat

Is a device used to maintain a steady temperature in a room or oven. Has a narrow constriction, so that temperature can be read accurately. Its thermometric property is the length of a column of mercury. Thermometer which measures body temperature. Is a device used to maintain a steady temperature in a room or oven.

Infra-Red Radiation Thermometer Thermistor

A probe is placed in the ear and the infra-red radiation emitted by patient is measured. Its thermometric property is infra-red radiation. Thermometer which measures body temperature. A semiconductor whose resistance decreases quickly with a small rise in temperature.

Characteristics of a Good Thermometer Standard Thermometer

Liquid varies continuously with temperature. If two different thermometers with different thermometric properties are used, they will only agree at the temperatures 0 ℃ and 100℃. They will disagree at different temperatures to these. This is called the ‘Standard Thermometer’ Everyone uses same type of thermometer when measuring temperature. Liquid varies continuously with temperature. Liquid used should not stick to the side of the glass. Low heat capacity Sensitive to changes in temperature. Good range on the scale

Pyrometer _________
