Technology enhanced learning Case studies in engineering Presentation by Nick Simpson Senior Lecturer 2017

This session Three technologies presented: Polling and live responses Augmented reality Smartphone sensors With a focus on: Enhancing learning Being more responsive Promoting self directed study and flipping the classroom

About me Senior Lecturer Teach predominantly on the BEng(hons) Civil and Environmental Engineering programme at UWE. Also teach on architecture programmes. Previously worked in an engineering design consultancy in London and Sydney.

Shape in civil engineering

How can we communicate complex geometry to students?

Traditional methods

The output is still flat! Emerging methods The output is still flat!

What is the cost of creating an Augmented Reality resource?

Dynamic teaching

Your turn! Step 1a: One person download the Vibrate It! App (Google play store only) Step 1b: Assemble the demonstrator Step 2: Collect some data

Did you estimate the frequency? Yes No

True False

Polling and being responsive Today we have used four ‘polling’ solutions: PollEv Socrative TurningPoint What has made me more responsive? Longer timetabled sessions. ‘Self contained’ topics. Polls at the beginning and end of sessions. Feedback between sessions e.g. Padlet.

Different approaches Path 1 Path 2 Institution procurement Free to use Blackboard/SCORM based Web based Labour intensive Fast to deploy Jack of all trades Single function Supported Not supported Intransient Dependable?

Quizlet revision exercises Thinglink interactive images “Path 2” examples in a Blackboard Using Padlet for feedback on learning resources and planning revision of taught materials Quizlet revision exercises Thinglink interactive images

What has worked for me? Try new platforms. Look for fast workflows (e.g. Augment, Quizlet). Look for iframe or SCORM support to integrate in to the VLE. What is work in progress Single use – too much noise? Extracting maximum value.

Thank you
