Scientific Notation Exponent Unit

Definition A method of writing or displaying numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10, multiplied by a power of 10.

Expanded Form To expand numbers in scientific notation: * move the decimal to the right if the exponent is positive * move the decimal to the left if the exponent is negative

Examples

Write in expanded form

Reverse.. To write numbers in scientific notation, put 1 nonzero number in front of the decimal point and count how many times you moved the decimal point. Big numbers have positive exponents Small decimals have negative exponents

Examples

Write in scientific notation

Operations with Scientific Notation To multiply scientific notation numbers, multiply the decimals in front first. Then, keep the 10 and add the exponents. Lastly, put the number back in scientific notation.

Examples

To divide scientific notation numbers, divide the decimal numbers first. Then, keep the 10 and subtract the exponents. Lastly, put the number back into scientific notation.

Example

Multiply or Divide
