Today: What is the power of public policy? 12/20/16: BR – What is (or was) the primary industry of Southeast Chicago. Describe the environmental impact this industry had on the area. Today: What is the power of public policy?

Notice: Policy Update! You do not have to clear out of your locker! You can keep your locker BUT You must register the locker number https://www.tinyurl.com/rhsstudentlocker You must secure the locker WITH A SCHOOL LOCK You may not use your own lock Lockers must be registered and secured with a school lock by December 23. Unregistered lockers or lockers with non school locks will have the locks cut and the contents emptied.

Unit 3 Essential Questions What is the power of public policy? Who has power to influence, make, and change public policy? How will you participate in creating and changing public policy.

To do: Pick up “Who Makes Policy?” Read through it and the matrix on the back “People in Government Who Make and Influence Policy” For each of the examples, write out who you think made each of the policies. Pick up “Case Study-Pollution in Southeast Chicago” Read the case study in small groups Answer the questions on the page, be prepared to discuss Also Answer on the case study: Look at the “People in Government Who Make and Influence Policy” handout If we took out the word “Government” What (or who) could we replace it with? What individuals, groups or businesses might be interested in the problems of Southeast Chicago?

Homework: Do some research. Can you identify any groups, individuals, or businesses that have advocated for policies in Southeast Chicago? Closure: Go back to the policy that you identified from last Friday. Identify which levels or branches of government might be involved in your policy. What to hand in?
