Objectives By the end of the lesson, SWBAT explain why Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected President of the United States in 1932. By the end of the lesson, SWBAT explain the political and policy differences between Roosevelt and Hoover.

Lightning Round Review Who was Herbert Hoover? What was the Great Depression like for many people? What was the Dust Bowl?

Great Depression The Great Depression was a challenging time for many Americans. After the stock market crashed in 1929, many people lost their life savings, jobs, factories closed, and America was not in a good spot.

Great Depression

President Hoover President Hoover was President of the United States when the Great Depression started in 1929.

President Hoover President Hoover believed that the U.S. government should not be involved in directly helping people by giving them money or jobs. He thought this would make the people to reliant on the government for their well-being. This made him very unpopular because many people wanted the government to help out in a time where there was a lot of unemployment and people were really poor and desperate.

President Hoover “Economic depression cannot be cured by legislative action or executive pronouncement. Economic wounds must be healed by the action of the cells of the economic body - the producers and consumers themselves.” - H. Hoover That basically means, the government cannot help the people get out of the Great Depression - the producers (people that make things) and consumers (people that buy things) have to figure it out.

President Hoover Do you think his policies made him popular or unpopular with the public? Why?

Unpopular Hoover People were not fans of Hoover. They even named the shanty towns that sprung up after a lot of people lost their houses, “Hoovervilles!”

1932 Therefore, President Hoover knew he was going to have a hard time being re-elected. Franklin Delano Roosevelt hoped he could defeat Hoover. FDR was born 1882 in New York to a wealthy family and had been governor of NY before deciding to run for Pres.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt FDR had a different vision for what the government should be doing during an economic recession (Great Depression). FDR campaigned around the country promising that the government would help people get jobs, food, and back on their feet! Do you think this was a popular campaign stance or not? Why?

New Deal... A big part of FDR’s campaign was the idea of a “New Deal” with America. The idea was, if you as an American were willing to work (which most Americans wanted to but couldn’t because there weren’t a lot of jobs) then the government would help you get a job. “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people!”

1932 Election What do you think happened in the election? Why?

1932 Election Franklin Delano Roosevelt won the election overwhelmingly! He won 57% of the vote and all but 6 states! The people of the U.S. liked the idea of a “New Deal.”

Victory!

New Hope Many people were excited to see President Roosevelt take office because they felt that he would do a lot more to help them get through the Great Depression than President Hoover.

Conclusion President Hoover was President at the start of the Great Depression Hoover believed that the U.S. government should not really help businesses or the people during the Great Depression because people need to depend on themselves. Roosevelt challenged Hoover in the 1932 presidential election and won because he promised a “New Deal” that sought to help struggling people out.
