LOCATION OF THE INCANS ISN p. 39 The Inca Empire developed in a long strip, along the western side of South America, that faces the Pacific Ocean. The REGION was rugged - Andes mountains, the coastline deserts, and the Amazon jungle.

AGRICULTURE ISN p. 39 Crops cultivated across the Inca Empire included maize, cacao, beans, grains, potatoes, pepper, tomatoes, nuts, squash, cucumber, quinoa, and avocado. They were known for TRADING cotton cloth.

INCAN HOUSING ISN p. 39 Inca houses were made from stone blocks and they had angled, thatched roofs. The Incas used mainly granite stones, because it was a hard, sturdy building material There was no furniture at all. Sleeping and sitting was done on mats placed on the bare floor. The Incas used a variety of architectural techniques, including fired mud bricks and shaped stones covered with mud and clay.

INCAN TRADE ITEMS ISN p. 39 Items used to trade were surplus vegetables, fruits like papaya, feathers, animal skins, pots, ropes, llamas, gold and silver, but to the Incas the most valuable trade was cloth. Cloth was very hard to produce only nobles were allowed to use prime cloth. They traded with other groups around the same area in open markets, quite similar to the way we still trade today. https://safeshare.tv/x/ss57e918266badc

Think-Pair-Share: The 5 THEMES of Geography & The Incas How were ideas and items MOVED throughout the region? Name a few items. Describe the REGION of the Incan civilization. What is the exact LOCATION of the main city? Describe the PLACE in which they lived.

INCA Interactions, Adaptions, and Achievements ISN p. 41 The Incas made their home high in the Andes mountains. To move about, 11,000 feet above sea level, the Inca built bridges between mountain peaks and over deep gorges. These bridges were made of sturdy vines. Only the animals that hauled food, warriors, the road runners called the chasquis (they carried messages using a relay system), the nobles, and government officials were allowed to travel on the bridges. They used llamas for wool, food, and as a means for transportation.    The tools the Inca’s used for building and farming came from their environment.  For farming they used stone hammers, sharp rocks used for slicing, and plow with bronze tips used for plowing fields for crops.  Bronze was made from melting minerals found in the region. They used stone to build advanced structures such as temples, and palaces which brought together the different social advancements for their time period

INCAN ACHIEVEMENTS ISN p. 41 FARMING – They built terraces which are large, flat stairs cut into the mountain for farming. CHASQUIS – They were trained runners who carried messages up and down the empire. MEDICAL – Used plants to cure illnesses, performed blood transfusions and brain surgery, created quinine to cure fevers. QUIPU – A mathematical, or counting tool. A cord with knotted strings of various lengths tied to it. ROADS AND WATERWAYS (CANALS) – They were gifted engineers who built a huge network of roads and canals expanding 14, 000 miles, crisscrossing the empire. https://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/worldhistory/incacivilization/

Think-Pair-Share How did the Incas (humans) INTERACT with their ENVIRONMENT? How were they medically advanced? Compare the math systems between the Mayan and the Incas. What made them great engineers?
